Definition: Reduction product of glucuronic acid (–CHO ? —CH2OH); oxidation product of l-gulose (–CHO ? —COOH); a precursor (except in certain primates, guinea pigs, certain fishes, and the Indian fruit bat) of ascorbic acid via l-gulonolactone.
