isthmus of fauces

 

Definition: the constricted and short space that establishes the connection between the cavity of the mouth and the oropharynx, bounded anteriorly by the palatoglossal folds and posteriorly by the palatopharyngeal folds; the lateral well is the tonsillar fossa.
