inflammatory myositis

 

Definition: inflammation of muscles characterized by symmetric muscle weakness, elevated serum levels of enzymes derived from skeletal muscles, and the presence of autoantibodies to t-RNA synthetases; classified as polymyositis when a systemic disease or dermatomyositis when accompanied by a photosensitive dermatitis that exhibits some features in common with subacute cutaneous lupus erythmatosus.
