Definition: The dried rhizome of Hydrastis canadensis (family Ranunculaceae), native to eastern U.S.; formerly used to treat chronic catarrhal states of the mucous membranes and in metrorrhagia.

Synonym(s): golden seal, jaundice root, yellow root
