histotoxic anoxia

 

Definition: poisoning of the respiratory enzyme systems of the tissues, as in the inhibition of cytochrome oxidase by cyanides; because of the inability of tissue cells to use oxygen, its tension in arterial and capillary blood is usually greater than normal.
