herpes esophagitis

 

Definition: infection of the esophagus with herpes simplex virus characterized by difficult and painful swallowing. Discrete ulcers of the esophageal mucosa are typically seen; frequently affects immunocompromised patients; diagnosis confirmed by viral inclusions on mucosal biopsy.
