Pronunciation: hel-e-o-trop'

Definition: A violaceous to dusky erythematous rash, with or without edema, in a symmetric distribution involving periorbital skin. It is a common cutaneous manifestation of dermatomyositis and is also noted in about 5% of cases of systemic lupus erythematosus.
