heart rate alternans

 

Definition: Variations in heart rate found in normal patients and in those with sundry disease states. An alternans beat is defined as a beat preceded and followed by beats with a different cycle time. Sinus arrhythmia is a common form of heart rate alternans and often a result of vagal nerve influence on the heart rate.
