Definition:

  1. in dental surgery, an operation in which a portion of the mucoperiosteal tissues is surgically detached from the underlying bone or impacted tooth for better access and visibility in exploring the area covered by the tissue.
  2. orthopaedics, plastic and reconstructive surgery an operation in which tissue is moved from one area to obtain coverage in another; can represent a local transfer of tissue (not requiring vascular anastomosis) or a distant transfer (requiring venular anastomosis).
