Definition: An elastic filamentous protein derived from fibrinogen by the action of thrombin, which releases fibrinopeptides A and B from fibrinogen in the coagulation of blood; a component of thrombi, vegetations, and acute inflammatory exudates such as in diphtheria and lobar pneumonia.
