Definition: Heart decompensation due to abnormal filling of a usually stiffer-than-normal left ventricle with normal systolic function (i.e., normal ejection fraction). Left ventricular hypertrophy, thickening of the left cardiac muscle, is a common cause for the development of diastolic heart failure.

Synonym(s): HEFpEF (heart failure with preserved ejection fraction), HEFnEF (heart failure with normal ejection fraction)
