Definition: historically, a bacterial species that causes relapsing fever in South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia; transmitted by the bedbug, Cimex lectularius, and the louse, Pediculus humanus humanus.

Synonym(s): Obermeier spirillum, Spirochaeta obermeieri
