Biomphalaria

Pronunciation: bī-om′fă-lā′rē-ă

Definition: An important genus of freshwater snails (family Planorbidae, subfamily Planorbinae), several species of which serve as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in Africa, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, South America, and the Caribbean. Host snails formerly were placed in the genera Australorbis, Tropicorbis, and Taphius but are no longer considered generically distinct.
