axonal degeneration

 

Definition: a type of peripheral nerve fiber response to insult, wherein axon death and subsequent breakdown occur, associated with secondary breakdown of the myelin sheath caused by focal injury to peripheral nerve fibers; often referred to as wallerian degeneration.
