assist-control ventilation

 

Definition: artificial positive-pressure ventilation by machine in which a full breath is produced automatically, following a patient's natural inspiratory effort. In the event that the patient does not initiate such an effort, the machine will provide a baseline, or “backup” respiratory rate.
