alteplase

 

Definition: Enzyme and drug formulation involved or used in the breakdown of blood clots. Catalyzes the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin. It is used to dissolve blood clots in acute myocardial infarction, cerebral stroke, and pulmonary embolism. Locally, it is used to break down blood clots seen in deep venous thrombosis or intravenous catheters.
