Definition: An oxidation product of uric acid, 2,4,5,6-pyrimidinetetrone; administration to experimental animals causes hypoglycemia resulting from insulin liberation, followed by hyperglycemia resulting from destruction of the islets of Langerhans (alloxan diabetes).
