acanthamebiasis

Pronunciation: ă-kan′thă-mē-bī′ă-sis

Definition: Infection by free-living soil and water amebae of the genus Acanthamoeba that may result in necrotizing dermal lesions, fulminating and usually fatal primary amebic meningoencephalitis, or subacute or chronic granulomatous amebic encephalitis.
