abdominal guarding

 

Definition: a spasm of abdominal wall muscles, detected on palpation, to protect inflamed abdominal viscera from pressure; usually a result of inflammation of the parietal peritoneal surface as in appendicitis, diverticulitis, or generalized peritonitis.
