Join your colleagues from around the world as we discuss the extent of the problem, the implications for everyone who works in higher education, and what can be done to better meet the needs of these college students and keep our campuses safe and secure. Specifically, we will explore how administrators, faculty and staff can better meet the needs of students with mental health diagnoses as well as those affected when an unfortunate event occurs on campus.

Indeed, understanding the characteristics of these students, the trauma they can potentially cause, and the impact it can have on all constituencies present on campus is essential to maintaining a safe, secure, and educationally-focused campus environment. It is imperative that decision-making protocols be in place that allows for the efficient identification of risk factors as well as a coordinated and ultimately successful intervention and recovery.

This webinar will present an applications-oriented, hands-on approach to dealing with students with mental health disorders and the traumatic events they can potentially precipitate. The emphasis will be on acting in the best interests of both the individual student(s) involved as well the campus as a whole. Students with emotional issues and mental health concerns often 'fall through the cracks' and subsequently drop out. This leads to lower retention and graduation rates, which affects the college or university's reputation, ranking and recruiting. Budgets sustain damage as universities hustle to fill unexpectedly empty classroom seats. Even worse, a student who is experiencing severe stress (which often accompanies unrecognized or untreated mental and emotional conditions) is much more likely to engage in dangerous, even deadly behaviors, which adversely affects the institution in a myriad of ways.

No one wants their school to be the site of the next student tragedy. Many of these problems are avoidable. Most institutions already offer an extensive array of mental health resources, but students don't take advantage for a variety of reasons, such as the stigma of being labeled as mentally ill, ignorance or misinformation about available resources, and fear of asking for help. As such, the potential for traumatic events to occur on the contemporary college campus is ever-present.As enrollments have grown and as the diversity of student populations has continued to evolve, the need to be prepared to respond effectively and comprehensively when unfortunate episodes occur has become more acute.

The key is developing an effective response that fits the particular circumstances that characterize the specific traumatic event. Before joining the faculty in 1991, he spent 10 years in progressive administrative positions, including five years as the Associate Director of University Housing at WKU. He was also head of the department of Counseling and Student Affairs for five years before returning to the faculty full-time in 2008. Dr. Hughey has degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Western Kentucky University, and Northern Illinois University.

He has authored (or co-authored) over 50 refereed publications on a wide range of issues including leadership, teams, conflict resolution, career development, standardized testing, diversity and administration. He regularly presents at national and international conferences and consults extensively with companies and schools. He also provides training programs on a variety of topics centered on efficient and effective management at all levels.
