Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have used this medicine for a staph bacterial infection. Normally, 9 years ago, it would work rapidly, and in 10 days it would be completely gone. But it has come back several times through the years. Now, with this last infection, I'm having to take double the dose every 12 hours, and I notice it has been hard to get rid of. I'm hoping I won't get this skin boil again because I'm afraid the antibiotics are not working 100%. What other options are there to take? But the Bactrim has been my savior, till now."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Bactrim DS cleared up my infected finger, just like most antibiotics do. The difference is in the side effects. The nausea and diarrhea are worse on this one. But the biggest problem was that my depression, which I had under control with medication, became worse than ever overnight. I don't know whether it interfered with my antidepressant (bupropion XL) or just aggravated the symptoms so much that it was uncontrollable. Either way, I spent a week alternating between despair and rage on a hair trigger. I would not try this again."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Prescribed Bactrim for boils on abdomen/legs. I was only able to take it for 3 days, due to the adverse reaction. The boils are much better (and I hope they don't come back), but the back pain, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea were enough to make me stop taking it. Plus, I'm not sure if this is a medicine of choice for anyone with ulcerative colitis, but now I'm having a huge flare of that!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I had a large abscess on my abdomen and was first put on Keflex. After a few days, the infection was spreading and I now had diarrhea. The clinic doctor switched me to Bactrim. I was nervous after reading reviews, but by the next day, I saw major improvement. I finished my full course and I feel great. It didn’t even upset my stomach. Obviously, some people have allergic reactions to it, but for me, it worked wonderfully."

"Have been using the medication for 2 days for a MRSA boil, and it has helped and started the healing process. The pain and redness have definitely decreased. I have nothing but good things to say about this medication."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have mixed feelings about this antibiotic. I had an infection (a cyst) that was draining badly. After day 1, the pain was gone and no drainage. The side effects are just awful, though. I’d wake up and my fingers would be hurting. I experienced extreme thirst and fatigue. I also had crystals in my urine and was scared to death I’d get a kidney stone, but so far I haven’t. Make sure you drink a lot of water on this medication! Also, avoid alcohol. Ugh, it’s going to be a long time until day 10 on this medication. I hope it helps you. It helped me but at a cost."

"Taken with cefadroxil twice a day for ten days. Got rid of the visible signs of the infection within one day. I experienced slight loss of appetite, but other than that, I didn't experience any side effects. However, on the last day of taking this medicine, I broke out in a rash all over my face, neck, arms, and chest. I'm hoping that it will go away because now I'm done with the medicine."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Yes, you will get a little diarrhea. You may also get a little bit of an upset tummy. Take Imodium and eat when you take your pill. Those side effects wear off in about two days. It's really not bad. I have horrible skin and break out in huge boils, it's so disgusting. Bactrim clears it up. Doxycycline no longer works for me, so Bactrim is my new reality. Every side effect is tolerable. Don't be scared of these other reviews."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Took Bactrim 4 days for skin infection, then quit due to not sleeping or being able to eat. I drank plenty of water but ended up feeling like my head was going to explode, joints aching, vision blurry, felt like I was being poisoned. The doctor said to continue taking, just make sure you eat. I let them know I was not able to eat, so I quit on my own, nobody's going to know what is going on with their body better than themselves, and it was just poisoning me. Three days after stopping Bactrim, I have a rash all over my body, and a week later still feel like my head is going to explode, very tired and vision blurry. Doctors put on my file to never take again as I am allergic to it."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Bactrim healed the abscess infection that I had, but the lethargy was absolutely crippling for me. The first day on it, I was driving and was literally falling asleep for 2-3 seconds at a time and almost crashing. Had to go home, obviously. Other than that, I had side effects, but even with caffeine, my body felt like it weighed 1000 lbs and couldn’t keep my eyes open."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have a huge infected cyst on my back that was recently drained. Started on a course of Bactrim for 7 days, BID. The first two days were okay, besides some increased anxiety and shakiness. At the end of the second night, I started having a tingling sensation in my throat. Not like an allergic reaction, but like a sore throat. I am hoarse, and it hurts to swallow. The outside of my neck has been itching, but nothing visible. Today, the morning of the fourth day, I could not will myself to take my morning dose. I feel like I'm taking chemo at this point. Very run down and lethargic. No GI symptoms. Mostly headache and this tingling in my throat and sides of my tongue. Not sure if I'm going to continue because the cyst has drained and the fluid is pretty clear at this point. The medicine did work, but I do not like the side effects."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Absolutely the worst medication I've ever been on, and I've been on a lot. If an alternative is offered, take the alternative. Intense thirst, super awful anxiety (borderline paranoia), stomachaches and heartburn out the wazoo, night sweats, rash, dizziness, joint pain, loss of appetite were my symptoms (amongst others). Doc switched me to clindamycin. Not a single side effect! Symptoms gradually got better after dropping Bactrim."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Never ever again will I take this medication. Ended up in the ER with what they said was cellulitis. Gave me Bactrim and Keflex to take. After taking the Bactrim, just after one day, headaches started. On day 4, I woke up and could not move any of my body, as every muscle, joint, neck, and head was so sore and aching. Went straight to urgent care, and they took me off the antibiotics. Still having severe pains all over, and I'm hoping it's just because the medication is still in my system. Seriously, do not take this. There are plenty more antibiotics to take than this and going through this also."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I had a facial abscess lanced at urgent care and prescribed Bactrim in case it was MRSA. I took it for about 8 days twice daily and lost my appetite, got headaches, and felt anxious and depressed. I continued to get cystic acne behind my ears, mostly the ear by the abscess that was drained, so the dermatologist PA told me to take Bactrim for another month, once a day. I took it another 12 days until I began having knee joint pain and achiness in my legs like I've got the flu. Oh, I was also getting the chills. I've been off it 3 days and still having very bad leg pain that's caused me to have a panic attack and extreme mood swings and depression. I know it's from this antibiotic... I'm praying that the pain goes away as it is debilitating and I was a healthy 30-year-old prior to this."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I was prescribed Bactrim after having an abscess on my leg drained. I started feeling horrible immediately. Joint pain, nausea, loss of appetite, high fevers. I ended up in the hospital for 3 days for drug fever and am still feeling the effects a week after coming home. I would not suggest taking this."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have a large swollen infection believed to be a staph infection. This medicine is working well, but on day 2, I am so nauseous, even after taking Zofran 8 mg. I cannot bear the thought of swallowing it or anything else. I've taken this before and did not get this effect. I have many other health issues at the time, but I was shocked I reacted this way."

"I'm a recovering heroin addict, and I had 3 super gnarly abscesses on my arms, so I went to the ER, got one of them drained, and was sent home with a prescription for the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim DS... Bactrim. After a little over a week, 9 days, the overall outcome for my abscesses is by far nothing short of awesome! I had to get the biggest one redressed a few times, and it hurt like anything, but it's definitely better now. I hope I don't experience any of the side effects that some of you mention. I'm on other meds for my heroin withdrawal, and use so maybe that's why I haven't experienced anything like this on here."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I was prescribed Bactrim DS for an infected callus between my toes. I am diabetic and take Tramadol for fibromyalgia and take extra potassium. All three were listed as serious drug interactions, but the pharmacist assured me I would be okay. Three days in, I was miserable. Headaches, exhaustion, nausea, and loss of appetite. And no, my urine didn't change to orange. And I drank lots of water too. I finally had to discontinue it."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Though it did cure the abscess in my ear, it caused severe (I mean SEVERE) muscle/bone pain in my legs, abdomen, and diaphragm. Later side effects were numbness with shooting pain in my left side leg and arm. I can barely walk. I had never taken Bactrim before (sulfonamide). I was also on cephalexin, but I do not believe that was the problem because I've taken that without issues. Please think twice before you take Bactrim. For me, the benefits certainly did not outweigh the risks. For now, I've lost my quality of life."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Exactly 7 hours after taking 1 Bactrim (generic form), I threw up and had to visit the ER and receive my steroids through IV since I had a bad allergic reaction. What’s with this stuff? It used to work, now it’s hurting people."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Got a nasty couple of mosquito bites that ended up streaking up my arms. Was prescribed Bactrim for the bacterial skin infection. First few days, my tummy was bad and not sleeping well. On the 7th day, I suddenly had the worst chills/shivers and low fever. By morning, my arms, legs, and torso were covered in a rash. Went to the ER and they immediately determined it was a Bactrim reaction. Said the drug is known to have nasty reactions and not sure why I was prescribed it when there are alternatives. If you have an alternative drug that is just as effective, not worth the risk."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "It's definitely working, but I'm taking a beating. Had a post-surgery skin infection. First, I took cephalexin, but it did not fully go away. Now on Bactrim, 2 pills in the morning and 2 at night. On day 4, felt the hardest. Also taking probiotics at bedtime to help the digestive system. Got to say this stuff punishes you. I don't feel like myself. Foggy all day, small periods of shakes, dry tongue and mouth. Wiped me out. Can't wait to return to me."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I developed a painful staph infection in my nose after a really nasty cold. Bactrim DS cleared it up quickly, but it was harsh on my body. The worst side effect that I had was extreme fatigue. Even walking around the house left me dizzy, out of breath, and shaking with exhaustion. Luckily, I had the sick days to take off work because I don't think I could have done it. I also had nausea and insomnia, but that was mostly just inconvenient. The exhaustion, though, was debilitating. I finished the entire 10-course because the staph infection was painful, and my nose was bright red and swollen. I was scared not to finish the meds. I would definitely ask for something else next time, though."

"I was prescribed sulfameth for a gross bacterial infection (jacuzzi rash). While on it, I experienced headaches, foul gas, loss of appetite, constant thirst, extreme fatigue, dizziness, spotting, and diarrhea (should have kept up with my probiotics). On the eighth day, I had itchy hives all over my body, severe lower back pain, neck and shoulder pain and stiffness. The doctor said to stop the medicine and consider myself allergic to sulfa drugs. My original rash had cleared up, but so did my two children, who didn't have any antibiotics. For me, obviously not worth the side effects."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Ugh, this medicine is the absolute worst I’ve ever experienced in my life. I know everyone is different, but my experience was brutal! Horrible dizziness, nausea, anxiety through the roof, chills, sweats, memory loss. I literally freaked out on the nurse helping me. I screamed, “I’m having a stroke!” It was like something came over me, like an out-of-body sensation. I got really dizzy, and it went blurry. Scary symptoms to have! Hopefully, nothing lingers. My doctor has to look up side effects because he said he didn’t know of many and was surprised to find nervousness, psychosis, and hallucinations being possible. Freaky experience! So now I am out on clindamycin for the MRSA."
