"Treated with Bactrim for MRSA. This drug ruined my life. Bactrim is a very strong drug. This is over a year now I’ve taken Bactrim, and it left me with a number of side effects up until now, a whole year later, with weight loss, stomach problems, tightness in the throat, rash, depression, lymph nodes, and other feelings I can’t describe. Please stay far away from this drug because I can’t understand how this drug is prescribed for so many different things to begin with, and it’s just making everyone worse than after they take it."

"After I got what I thought was just a minor infection from a wound caused by an ill-fitting pair of Vans, things progressed to the point where I had a festering boil on my right foot. This was alarming, since I'm not immunocompromised, but I ended up spiking a fever of 102 degrees and was rushed to urgent care. The doctor had prescribed Bactrim for the infection, specifically 800/160mg of Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. I learned that this was a staph infection 3 days later when the wound culture results came back. The Bactrim worked perfectly, with my staph infection clearing up in about a week, although it had made my acne slightly worse due to 'purging.' Apart from worsening acne, there were no other side effects. The pills were large but easy to swallow."

"Was misdiagnosed with cellulitis, later went to a podiatrist who removed an ingrown toenail that was infected. I didn’t even need this Bactrim. Gave me intense, shooting, burning pains all over my body, high blood pressure, severe dehydration, a fever, and panic attacks back to back. I was shaking violently from being so cold, I could not feel my limbs, but they were on fire at the same time. Poison."

"Had cut my foot at a beach and was prescribed Bactrim, got the chills and chattering teeth, told to continue, and the next day had severe diarrhea and vomiting at the same time, hospitalized for several days, body bloated to twice my normal size, near death, would never take a sulfur drug again, especially Bactrim."

"I got a staph infection with a boil on my arm and was prescribed Bactrim 2x/day for 10 days. Started on 7/3. The large hard painless boil lump did not subside but did not get worse, so there’s that, but possibly it was already contained. I admit I did not drink tons of water. Seven days in, on 7/10, I got a huge red dot rash and itchy hive plaques on my inner forearms and upper thighs. Took Benadryl at night but woke up a couple of hours in with itchy heels and big hive plaques on my butt cheeks, so I couldn't sleep. This went on for days, where a new area would rise and bump up, like all over my back, arms, and chest. Antihistamines helped with the itch a little, but the weird skin was still there. I stopped Bactrim on 7/11. Hives stayed until the end of 7/15. May come back. Read this drug can lead to Steven Johnson's syndrome-yikes."

"DO NOT take this if you are an athlete. Three days into my treatment for a staph infection, I started developing bilateral ankle pain. I brushed it off as nothing. However, the pain gradually increased over the next several days. By day eight of my ten-day course, my ankle pain was terrible. I have never had any ankle problems in my life until now! It feels like I am 90 years old! On top of that, my Achilles' tendon also started acting up. I stopped the course right then. Yes, the medicine cleared up the infection, but the alternatives could have done the same. Four days post last dose, and I am still experiencing ankle pain and am currently unable to do any sort of athletic activity. I am hoping this goes away soon. Demand an alternative if you are prescribed this. I would rather poop water for a month straight from an antibiotic than have what feels like an arthritic ankle!"

"My son was prescribed this drug after being hospitalized for an eczema infection. Then, 7 days later, he is covered in pin-dotted rash and high fever due to Bactrim. The doctor told me to give him Benadryl every 4 hours for now. He can't sleep at night, I'm worried his rash will get worse and he will stop breathing. The doctor says to rush him to the ER if symptoms get worse. This drug should not be given to a 9-year-old."

"I was very hesitant to take this drug after reading the reviews online. Indeed, I was prescribed it for a bacterial skin infection. However, it did little to nothing to eliminate my infection. On day 1 of taking it, I started getting minor headaches. Every time I took a dose after that, it made my headache even worse. It just felt like I was putting something harmful in my body. If you're ever in a situation where you are prescribed it (and it's not a life-or-death situation), tell your doctor no. Do it for your own body's sake."

"I was just prescribed this antibiotic today due to a staph infection in each leg from shaving. My doctor mentioned MRSA, needless to say, I'm freaking out over this. Regardless, it's been about 4 hours since I took the first pill - obviously, the infection sites haven't gotten any better, but I'm hoping they do. As far as side effects go, I'm lucky so far to only have a little bit of heartburn and slight nausea/loss of appetite. I'm crossing my fingers this stuff works for me!"

"I was prescribed this for a boil. Do not take this drug if you're on an antidepressant. I took this Friday, and by Monday, I started to get extreme anxiety and depression, lightheaded, dizzy, nausea, stomach problems. I stopped taking it Monday morning, and today, Tuesday morning, I’m still feeling the effects, but they are lessening. Talk to the doctor about another antibiotic."

"I had cellulitis on my face, which swelled up significantly. Having worked in healthcare as a nursing aide for several years, I knew the diagnosis before the physician confirmed it and realized antibiotics would be necessary. What I didn’t expect was a horrendous neuropsychiatric reaction to the medication. I was extremely nervous and could not sleep on day 3 and ended up having a severe anxiety attack. The episodic depression and odd behavior such as standing in one place without moving for hours was frightening. Thankfully, after 2 more hospital visits, I was put on a cephalosporin which eliminated the anxiety. My family physician has put this medication on my chart beside the penicillin allergy (anaphylaxis) and wrote “neuropsychiatric reaction.” Bactrim is by far the worst medication I’ve ever been on."

"I am sharing my experience because I want others to know there is hope for recovering from the extremely rare and life-changing side effects that happened to me on Bactrim. I took it for 3 weeks for recurring acne cysts that kept forming behind my ear that started with an abscess being drained in front of my ear. The first week I felt okay, but by the 2nd, I could hardly eat and felt depressed and anxious. I quit taking it, and the cysts kept coming, so the dermatologist told me to keep taking it to clear up the infection. At 3 weeks, I woke up with knee joint pain, and a couple days later, I noticed my calves got very sore from doing normal things. I immediately quit the Bactrim, but it was too late. A week later, the pain was worse, and I was very scared. I had every blood test done, MRIs on my knee and calf, and everything was normal. I got worse as the months progressed, and finally, 6 months later, I began to feel better. I had to quit my amazing job and was in the most depressed state. I'm healthy and 31 female."

"Bactrim is extremely effective - where other antibiotics might fail - but many doctors seem to underestimate the severity of side effects (including uncommon ones). It is always difficult for me to be consistent with Bactrim dosage because I experience severe nausea and bouts of dizziness. It may be easy to complain, but I also recognize that an alternative might not be appropriate. Instead, I asked to also be prescribed anti-nausea medication. It's not fun, but it can be tolerable."

"Bactrim for me gives me a sore on the bottom of my right foot. If I discontinue taking it, the sore goes away, but only now I realized it. I had an abscess years ago and took all of my medicine, with one antibiotic being Bactrim, and I was limping for days. I then noticed a long red sore from my toes to the middle of my foot. After treatment, it formed a scab that eventually peeled off, causing a dent on the bottom of my foot. Well, today I forgot about the side effects of Bactrim, and my same foot is starting to hurt again in the same exact spot. I think it is a fixed drug eruption (FDE). I'm discontinuing this medication, for it does me no good."

"I recently had a boil lanced and was prescribed Bactrim. About 45 minutes after taking the first dose, which was two tablets, I began to have a severe itch throughout my body. My tongue, throat, face, and hands started to swell. Had to be taken to the ER due to an anaphylactic reaction. I found out I am allergic to this type of medication. I am now leery of any type of new medication being prescribed."

"I was prescribed this drug for a boil I’ve been getting since 16, and I’m 23. I’ve been to the hospital and have had many minor surgeries, and I can say this definitely works. After I had the abscess lanced, it had sealed back up within 5 days of taking this. It had brought the boil back to a head again so I could drain it to relieve the pain and abscess! And it just makes my knees hurt from time to time."

"I had what I thought was a boil on the back of my leg, so I went to the ER. The worst pain of my life, cutting it open. I left, they gave me Bactrim. OMG, I woke up with the worst headache. My body dried out because of the medicine. My lips cracked and bled just by moving my lips. I went to a different ER, blood pressure is 181/164. I have shakes, blurry vision, pain all over my body. I have HIV and diabetes, so I'm scared. They gave me tramadol and sent me home. I've got my husband writing this because I'm so weak. So please, doctors, if you read this, we know our bodies better than you, and I should have been admitted, but the only excuse is I might pick up another infection. I can do that being out in the open. SMH, I feel like I'm dying and nobody is listening."

"I was given Bactrim for vestibulitis, a sinus infection, and bronchitis. The medicine was hardly effective. I just finished it. While on it, all of my symptoms got worse, and I had severe headaches, neck stiffness, and I was so tired all day. I tried dealing with the side effects because I wasn't sure if it was the medicine or just being sick. Went back to my doctor today, and because I'm not better, he switched me to azithromycin and gave me some steroids for my energy levels. This medicine was awful. By the 7th day, I was smelling and tasting the medicine all day. Really, I could've dealt with the side effects if the medicine helped me, but it did not."

"I went to the emergency room due to a hot, burning, stinging, itchy rash on my hand with what seemed to be white welts. I was also experiencing some nausea and felt weak. The doctor examined my hand and diagnosed me with cellulitis. He prescribed me Augmentin, which he knew I was allergic to. At least I noticed it before I took it. He had to change my antibiotic to Bactrim. I was given one dose at the hospital because no pharmacies were open on New Year's Day. That night I felt a slight headache. The night seemed extremely longer than usual. Each hour seemed like two or three. I didn't think the night was going to end. I was up every few hours with a dry mouth. I also had a dream that was frightening, it was of a friend stabbing me."
