"I have been taking this medicine for about 3 years for PTSD. (Nightmares) It is a lifesaver for me. Only bad thing, I guess, is I have no dreams at all. It helps with my blood pressure also. The VA prescribes this for me."

"Suffer from CPTSD from 37 years in law enforcement. I always have, at least, one severe nightmare a night, usually several. I took Prazosin for about two years with great results. In fact, I had the doctor take me off it because the nightmares subsided. After being off it for 9 months, nightmares came back with a vengeance. Back on it now, and much improvement. I still have some nightmares, but only about 20% of what I normally did."

"I was prescribed Prazosin to help tame my exhausting vivid dreams. I wasn’t having nightmares per se, but my dreams constantly woke me, and I was exhausted the next day. It really seems to help. It’s like I’m an observer since starting this, rather than a participant, and able to sleep much more restfully."

"I suffer from PTSD that triggers night terrors. It got to the point where even high doses of medical marijuana didn't help. I am on Ambien for insomnia, but the PTSD developed after the fact, and there was no improvement with or without Ambien. My psychiatrist told me about prazosin and said how there's a large range of dose options, but we'll start low. Be sure you're steady when standing up and down when you take it before bed, because it can make you dizzy since it's traditionally for heart-related illnesses. I am now on 4 mg, and my night terrors have decreased maybe 55-60%. I don't want to increase my dose because of occasional nighttime dizziness, although he said that some patients do go up to 15 mg. I do still have dreams and nightmares on occasion, but not nearly as much or nearly as vivid."

"My psychiatrist put me on prazosin for PTSD nightmares in September. It worked really gradually, after about a month, I realized I hadn’t had a nightmare for a few weeks. They were a 4-5 day a week occurrence on good weeks since I was about 6 years old. I ran out due to an insurance issue last week, and after 2 days, my nightmares were back and swinging big. Last night, I got back on it, and I hope that tonight the nightmares are gone again. But either way, the medicine made a huge difference for my quality of life."

"I used to suffer from PTSD-related recurrent nightmares or dreams of being helpless, being trapped in situations either physically or emotionally. Within one week of taking Prazosin, I noticed marked improvement in my quality of sleep and dreams. And steady progress. It has been emotionally liberating in a year of use."

"It worked OK the first couple of nights, then terrible, sweat-soaked nightmares returned, but they go back and forth. I was instructed to stop taking it a week after I started, and now my nightmares are on and off. I told my mother today that I think it was a placebo, but even if it is, I'm very happy it slowed the night terrors a lot."

"I was given 2 mg of prazosin for screaming in my sleep. The next morning, when I got up to feed my cats, as I was standing at the kitchen counter, I felt very faint... and then I did faint. In the process of fainting, I collapsed, crushed one ankle, and sprained the other. I went through months of not being able to take care of myself. I'll just keep screaming."

"I have a rare disorder, REM sleep behavior disorder. I was wondering if 'Unsettling dreams,' who posted on April 13, 2020, might also have REM sleep behavior disorder. Talking, yelling, and acting out dreams are symptoms of the disorder. Please see a neurologist about this. My neurologist prescribed prazosin - 1 mg., and I tried it last night for the first time. I still had nightmares, but I'm hoping it will work if I take it for a while. I've also read that clonazepam may help with this disorder."

"I’m a 22-year-old female with chronic depression, anxiety disorder, PTSD, and some other stuff unrelated to nightmares. I have had nightmares every time I dream since childhood. You really need to try the drug yourself to determine its worth; seems like for everyone it’s different. I have low body weight (105 lbs), taking 2 mg makes me drowsy, fatigued, sweaty, and hypotensive, sleeping 14 hours a day with no energy for school. The nightmares have gotten much worse, very vivid, bizarre, outlandish, though it makes me stop dreaming that frequently. I stopped for a year now, and my nightmares are worse than before I tried the pill. My body just never got used to the effective dosage, and it was simply too strong for me to handle to be able to function daily."

"I was recently prescribed 1 mg Prazosin for nightmares. For context, I went through pretty extensive therapy for PTSD and the only remaining symptom is nightmares. I no longer meet the diagnostic criteria for PTSD (yay), but have severe Major Depression and mild anxiety. I didn't realize how much my nightmares/sleep disturbance was contributing to my depression. Prazosin has greatly increased my sleep quality and I have lovely dreams now. Sleep used to be so unpleasant that I would stay up late and fall asleep in front of the TV almost every night. Now, I am following a nighttime routine and falling asleep cuddling my partner. Up until now, antidepressants just weren't cutting it. My psych was considering a diagnosis of Treatment-Resistant Depression. With the Prazosin, I am finally sleeping well, which is giving me/meds a fighting chance during the day. I am so grateful for this medication and recommend it to anyone struggling with sleep disturbance."

"I started having horrific and violent nightmares about four months ago, with night sweats and tossing and turning, cramped fingers and lower legs, and a tight chest by morning. Put on prazosin 1 mg a night and nightmares disappeared for about two weeks but then came back even worse than before. Doc raised it to 2 mg, and nightmares disappeared for a week but returned, and then 3 mg/night, but it has been of little help. Since I'm already on a blood pressure med, I am weaning myself off the prazosin and will have to deal with the nightmares in some other way or not at all."

"I have been taking prazosin for two months now. I’ve taken it in the past, over a year ago, and I will warn you, I could not use this while being on birth control! When I was on birth control, I tried this to relieve my nightmares at that time. It gave me adverse effects, and my nightmares were so vivid, I was scared to fall asleep some nights. But a year later, I was waking up 3-5 times a night from bad dreams or just in general, for months on end. I decided to try prazosin without being on birth control, and what a difference! I now barely have dreams that I can recall, and I take 2 mg. It is a drug you have to keep taking because I missed two days one time, and my old nightmares/waking up 4 times a night came back. The only side effect I noticed, sometimes, is my heart rate is a tad bit faster. So I always try to take it as soon as I’m going to bed."

"I started taking 2 mg a night for my PTSD nightmares. I thought that they weren’t really doing anything, as I was still having nightmares. The doctor upped my dose to 5 mg and boy was I wrong about it not doing anything. I had the worst string of horror-induced sleepless nights of my life. I’d sleep in 3-hour intervals, always ending with me being jerked awake by some new terror. Some nights I’d sleep just the 3 hours. Some nights I’d have multiple nightmares in one night. Needless to say, those pills were going down the toilet. I really gave it a try because it apparently works for other people and I really could use some dreamless sleep, but uh lol sadly, no. Guess me and my nightmares will have to go it alone."

"I took prazosin for a few months under the care of a psychiatrist in combination with other medications. I found this drug to do nothing for me. Nothing positive (less frequent or intense nightmares) nor negative (no new side effects). I stopped taking it and I'm currently trying other therapies."

"Prazosin has changed my life. I suffered from extremely disturbing nightmares related to trauma for most of my life. Since starting prazosin, my nightmares have completely stopped, only to be replaced by intensely real dreams. I am no longer afraid to go to sleep at night, and I’m not waking through the night terrified of the nightmares I was experiencing. My dreams are so crisp and clear and sometimes weird, but not scary anymore. I’m so thankful for this medication."

"I’ve struggled with PTSD nightmares and insomnia for years. Taking prazosin, Vistaril, and clonidine has been the perfect cocktail to get through the night. I have NEVER slept so well. My nightly flashbacks have subsided, but I have continued to have super vivid dreams, they are not traumatizing or even sleep-disturbing. In fact, they’re pretty cool, like a little movie. I would definitely recommend this med, and I wish I had known sooner about this due to how long I struggled with this."

"I take this for C-PTSD with dissociative symptoms, and it’s doing its job when it comes to the PTSD stuff. Been on it for a little over a year, but it's gotten rid of my sex drive. I started on 1 mg at night, went up to 6 mg at night and 2 in the morning, but I started having dizzy spells, so we went back to 4 at night and 2 in the morning. Hasn’t helped with the nightmares, still have them most nights, but I’m at least not on edge all the time anymore."

"I've been taking prazosin for nightmares/night terrors for five years, and it's as effective now as it was the first time. A lifesaver. I never wake up nauseated and sweating from the memory of dreams that will ruin the day anymore. Thank God for prazosin."

"I have to say this is the worst 'medication' I have ever taken. My experience was bad. The pill was 'scientifically' scary. I had vivid nightmares at night. This pill was a nightmare, and I was mad the doctor prescribed it."

"I dream of my trauma. The whole process of the dreams, the emotions, the sweating. My days would just relive the dreams and the trauma. The doctor started me on Prazosin and I still dream, but somehow I do not have the emotions. I can actually forget my dreams. It's the strangest medicine, but I am not arguing with results."

"I am new to this, but my nightmares and night terrors have stopped, thank God. I've been having more odd dreams, they feel real, and let's just say very realistic and kind of funny, but kind of crazy. But it really helps me out with sleep. I'm kind of scared to get off it because I read that the bad dreams would come back, but also, if I keep taking them, it could damage my brain or heart. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, but I will stick with them for now and see where they will take me. If you're reading this and you're on it too, good luck, and listen to your doctor, eat healthy, and don't get up too fast. Take your meds on time, never miss them, even if you say I don't need them because you do. I almost did the same, but I haven't skipped a single day because I don't like the nightmares too real and too scary, but if I'm on them, it's not so terrible."

"I started taking it for chronic PTSD nightmares. I've been suffering for 6 months every night. I've tried multiple medications and nothing has helped as much as this one. It’s not a miracle pill, I still have nightmares, but their severity has decreased, and I'm not waking up screaming anymore. I’m still terrified to go to sleep, but my quality of sleep has improved, and I don’t just have only nightmares. I have some regular dreams as well. The terror I feel while sleeping has eased quite a bit. The side effects I feel are it’s incredibly hard to wake up and stay awake in the day. I'm quite sleepy, but a small price to pay to actually get a semi-good night of sleep after months."

"Dr. prescribed it for me last week to help me sleep. Other sleep meds I recently tried have given me nightmares, so I only took one or two nights. First two nights were great on Prazosin. I slept well. Only up 2x to potty. Last two days, I've felt very drugged all day. Only 1 mg. I took Ambien for about 15 years, and it was a miracle drug! Then it wasn't as effective, so Dr. added Trazodone. It helped for 2-3 years, but then I was ravenously hungry, even if I'd just eaten before bed. Then I'd wake up 2-3x a night and would have to eat something to be able to fall back asleep. I am diagnosed with PTSD, but it's been years since it's been bad, so it was worth a try since other meds (non-narcotic) gave me nightmares. It's worth a try. Just not for me long term. I can't take a controlled sleep med (like Ambien). I take 2 narcotic pain meds, and if I take a controlled night med, I have to give up a dose of pain meds, and it's not worth it."

"I would have intense nightmares/night terrors of my trauma with a little bit of my spiritual beliefs infused with them. So I would literally dream of my Sergeant as a black-eyed demon and my base as hell. I don’t know why I dream like this, but I’m literally afraid of the dark. Well, anyways, at first, I was placed on prazosin in late 2019 with 1 mg. (I didn’t think it could go any higher at the time.) It worked at first until I had my first nightmare of the devil… when it didn’t stop that. I grew hopeless and ultimately thought the medication didn’t work. Now, late 2021, I’m back on it at 1 mg. I think it’s important to note that I’ve been in therapy and doing really well—and it works! I sleep so well at night. Best sleep I ever had. I thank everybody involved. I thank my Angels for fighting these demons. I think my strength to keep going on and giving it another chance."
