"I began taking these as directed on the box. Have had this dull migraine ever since. Migraine is dull because I've been taking my Nurtec for it. Nurtec normally kicks my migraines' butt, but when it didn't, I began to wonder if it was these supplements. So glad I came across this site! I now know it was being caused by a reaction to the AREDS 2. The nausea wasn't from my migraine, as I had thought too. It was from this supplement. So thankful for everyone who has shared their experiences here, as it is preventing me from the continued misery being caused by this supplement. If I hadn't come across this site & thread, I would have continued thinking my body either needed to adjust to the supplement or was experiencing an out-of-the-normal migraine episode."

"I just wanted to improve my eyesight, and my mom recommended AREDS 2. Never taken them consistently, but experienced nausea every time, especially if I took it on an empty stomach. Two days ago, I took my regular vitamins, which consist of vitamin D and iron, and a few minutes later, took an AREDS 2 and got horribly sick. I had severe stomach cramps and nausea, I couldn’t get out of bed I was in so much pain. After taking Prilosec and a Nexium, I managed to feel a little better that evening. The next day, every time I tried to eat or drink water, my stomach began to cramp, and I experienced extreme dehydration and joint pain no matter how much water I drank. Hopefully, the worst is over, will never take those again! They should be taken off the market or have some serious warnings on them!"

"After reading through these accounts of AREDS 2 side effects, I am starting to wonder whether my frequent headaches, occasional bad constipation, dizzy spells, and a recent diagnosis of low blood pressure (90/49) after three months on AREDS 2 for macular degeneration might be related. It never occurred to me until I read this chat box. I am curious to know if anyone else has experienced a significant drop in their blood pressure due to AREDS 2. Before switching to the new AREDS 2, I was using AREDS with lutein, which had stabilized my macular degeneration without any complications."

"I should have checked before ordering this medication. I took my first dose yesterday, and within an hour was horribly ill with stomach cramps, severe bloating, nausea, and back pain. Somehow, it didn’t occur to me that it was the PreserVision. I just took a second day's dose twenty minutes ago, and am already feeling sick again. Googled and found these reviews. I’m so angry. This is ridiculous. This shouldn’t even be on the market or, at the very least, should come with clearly marked warnings. Sitting here, wondering if I should try to bring this dose back up or flush my system with water."

"I had been taking it for seven months and noticed issues with my eyes: more blurry vision and ghosting when looking at white text on a dark background on my phone, like when checking the weather app. My eyes seem tired and felt funny. Then I got a floater for the first time. That’s when I found this forum and started reading about other side effects: constipation. Yep. Headaches. Yep. I also started having a floating feeling in my head. It all sent me to the doctor to rule out causes. I’ve stopped taking this and have started feeling better. Anyone experience the ghosting? That’s the one thing I didn’t read here."

"My eye doctor recommended that I start taking this supplement after he discovered that I have the beginnings of glaucoma. I would take one in the morning and one at night. Within a short amount of time, I experienced a very sore feeling in my stomach, with a lot of belching and horrible, persistent gas. I thought it was due to a new coffee that I was trying. I have been diagnosed with gastritis and a bilateral hiatal hernia in the past, so I have to be careful of what I consume. I initially did not think that AREDS 2 was the culprit. I changed coffee and stopped taking all of my supplements, and quickly I felt so much better. I decided to slowly start reintroducing my supplements back in. And then it occurred to me that I should look up the side effects of AREDS 2. Boy, am I glad that I did! I found all of these reviews, and I was astonished. I felt that I needed to contribute my experience as well."

"I was prescribed AREDS2 by a retina therapist. Said to take any brand. I chose Preservision AREDS2 as I heard it was the best. Well, after I started taking it the first day, I felt extremely nauseous, very shaky, diarrhea, blurred vision. I kept taking my 1 in the am & 1 in pm with food and did it for 5 days and just became sicker & sicker. It was so bad. So, I stopped taking it and am having a terrible time getting it out of my system and it's been 3 days and still sick. I am staying very hydrated. I saw my eye doctor, and he said to stay off it and that it should be out of my system in 5 days. This stuff is extremely high in Zinc, 40 mgs per capsule, so taking 2, you are getting 80 mg of Zinc, which is way too much, especially for me as I only weigh 98 lbs and am a small woman. That’s way too much Zinc for me. Even 1 capsule of 40 mgs of Zinc is way too much! So, I attribute the huge amounts of Zinc to causing me to get so sick. I have read reviews stating that the Zinc dosage was way too high. I'll try one that has only 12.5 mg."

"I have wet macular degeneration in one eye. Have been taking Eylea injections every 6 weeks for two years. In the last six months, taking 2 PreserVision AREDS 2 capsules each day, the most annoying symptom is severe constipation, which I have rarely had in the past. My retina specialist recommended these, and I have regularly taken them. I’m interested in another compound which would be effective."

"I have used AREDS 2 for at least 4 years with little problem, but in the last few weeks have had extreme leg pain to the point that walking is difficult. I only take AREDS and B/P medication, and after talking to my doctor, who has never heard of this problem with AREDS, we changed my B/P meds, which did not help. I researched on the computer and found that AREDS can cause this problem. I have stopped the use of AREDS 2, and after a week, my pain is so much better. Have other people had any similar issues? I wish there was better documentation!"

"This drug gave me the worst constipation I've ever experienced. I drink a pot of coffee every morning, and after I have a bowel movement without fail, like clockwork. Not on this drug! I took this drug, 1 gel capsule per day for 3 weeks before I realized this was the drug causing it. The constipation was so severe, it took two Enemeez in a row, and it was the most painful pass of my life. I've been off of the drug for 3 days now, and it's getting better, but WOW! Avoid this drug like the plague!"

"I took one after eating and had a bad stomach ache. I tried again the next morning and became very nauseous and tired, and had projectile vomiting and slept all afternoon. Not a good vitamin for me. My husband takes it and has no problems! Go figure!"

"Diagnosed very young for age-related MD - I’ve been on AREDS for years with very little progression of this disease. Because I have taken AREDS, I can only tolerate one per day, and yet it held my MD from getting worse, it has gotten better! I’m 61 now - I thought I’d be blind! It does make me sick sometimes, and it’s awful, but I’d rather be sick sometimes than blind. I’m grateful even when I’m terribly sick."

"Was told to take 2 a day because of beginning macular degeneration. Immediately had upset stomach, pain in stomach, felt yucky. I’m getting my money back from Costco and telling my 2 eye doctors and will be looking for something else. I think PreserVision needs to know about these complaints and devise a new formula."

"I started taking AREDS 2 many years before my diagnosis of AMD. My dad took them for his AMD, so I was genetically in the high-risk category and figured I'd get a 'leg up.' I've been taking them for probably 8 years with no problem, and that (and, I'm convinced, my daily dose of blueberries - doctor-approved!) has kept my AMD from worsening. Just recently, I started getting blurriness in one eye and went to see my specialist to make sure it wasn't a bleed (I have dry MD in both eyes). He said there had been a couple of recent studies about MD and zinc, and since I was in the high-risk range, he gave me a substitute eye supplement with only 25mg of zinc as opposed to 80. So while I just recently had a problem with it (perhaps), I have to say it's served me really well for a long time."

"PreserVision AREDS 2 ~ 2 daily, with food. 1 morning, 1 evening. Severe sleeplessness, only 3 or 4 hours a day. Night sweats and blurred vision. Sorry for those who have much worse side effects. This page was difficult to find."

"I took AREDS 2 religiously twice a day, probably about 8 years. When zinc became popular for COVID prevention, I googled and realized I was getting twice the recommended dose of zinc in AREDS. I then saw I had several of the rare side effects of AREDS. The only one I can definitely attribute to AREDS is breast pain, which went away when I stopped taking it. Joint pain, trouble going to sleep, low energy, and a weak feeling could be age. The retinal doctor was almost rude when I told him and asked about only taking one a day. My eyes hadn't gotten worse while on it. I haven't had an exam since stopping it."

"I have been struggling with abdominal pain and nausea for six months. I have diverticulitis, and I thought perhaps it was due to that. I had an ultrasound and a CAT scan done, and everything was normal. I didn’t realize that perhaps it could’ve been the AREDS 2 that I started taking. After hearing all of the other comments, that’s what it was. I asked my eye doctor what she recommends, and she told me about another vitamin to take. I have just ordered some, and I have stopped taking AREDS 2."

"I have been taking PreserVision AREDS 2 on recommendation from my retina specialist. The gel capsules make me very nauseated even when taken with food. I am stopping them temporarily. The chewable formula was better."

"After noticing a decline in vision that I was told is normal for my age, I tried a bottle of PreserVision once and noticed some blurred vision, but no noticeable improvement overall. A couple of years later, I decided to try again, starting with two bottles. (Since I usually do not have bad reactions to supplements and I had taken these previously.) Immediately, I noticed mild to severe nausea after every pill. I stopped taking them and tried again a few times, taking one a day. Still no improvement in nausea and some blurred vision. I regret purchasing two bottles and will definitely be more careful with supplements in the future."

"My doctor advised that I had the very early signs of macular degeneration and suggested AREDS 2 (one per day in the morning). A week later, I had a terrible dizzy spell. Thought maybe it was just from the heat. However, two days later, I was sitting in the house and had another terrible dizzy spell. The only thing I could contribute it to was AREDS 2. Stopped taking them and have not had any additional dizziness. I have since talked to others who have taken this drug, and they advised they stopped taking it due to various issues they experienced."

"I started taking PreserVision on the advice of an optometrist who said she detected AMD in my right eye. I started taking it 4 months back. About 3 weeks back, I started noticing that my eyes get tired quickly and my vision getting blurred. It seemed to get worse day by day. I assumed that my AMD was getting worse, but does it progress so quickly? Then I read the reviews here and saw other people were getting blurred vision too. I stopped it 3 days back, and it seems my blurred vision is improving. Not sure yet. I am meeting an ophthalmologist this week and hope to find out the truth."

"I don’t normally write reviews, but I wanted to share a positive experience with AREDS 2 that my mom and I both had. My mom was first prescribed AREDS 2 by her optometrist after her cataract surgery at the age of 75. She had no issues or side effects from this vitamin supplement. After her follow-up appointment with her eye doctor and the positive benefits it was doing for her eye condition, I also started taking them at the age of 45. I have been taking them now for 8 years, and through laser surgery, my doctor was impressed with how fast my eyes healed. I haven’t had any reactions or side effects from this vitamin supplement either, and I believe it has also helped in keeping my eyes moist and from drying out. My review is to say that AREDS 2 has helped and worked as described benefits for our family, and we have been very fortunate not to have had any of the allergic reactions that have been noted and discussed in the previous reviews and warnings."

"After about a month of taking AREDS 2, I began getting sudden strong nausea. I reduced to 1 a day and began taking it with food, but nausea persists. I have to immediately eat rice cakes after to get rid of the nausea. They have zinc oxide: 'Nausea and vomiting are commonly reported side effects of zinc toxicity.'"

"My doctor recommended this eye supplement to protect my eyes from the beginnings of macular degeneration, which is currently stable. I take one tablet with breakfast and one with dinner and have done so for about one month. Well, I haven’t been sleeping soundly since taking these red pills. I’ll sleep for two or three hours and then need to use the bathroom, and then two or three more hours of sleep, etc. I’m glad I found others on this site with sleep issues due to the red pill! I’m going to stop taking it."
