"Trying to use this product, bad nausea, unable to take 2 per day as recommended. Tried Vitalux - body can't handle them, stomach problems continually with both medications. Don't see any difference to eyesight. Have Drusen, which I was told could be a sign of age-related macular degeneration, but some articles read say you can have them with no degeneration. Thinking of stopping this medication, at least going to talk with the doctor when I see him in June."

"Just a tip for anyone having issues with nausea while taking this product: I was experiencing the same issue, and I switched to the chewables. Ever since then, I have never felt it again! I think something in the pill's gel coating causes that feeling. Hope that this helps!"

"This morning when I woke up, I thought, “Why am I waking up daily feeling tired and unrested, and why am I experiencing nightly, negative, and complex dreams?” Tried to determine what’s new in my life — no new meds, no dietary change, no new vitamins — wait — I started taking this Bausch + Lomb pill due to cataract growth in both eyes. Recommended by a friend. Decided to research side effects, which led me to this website/postings. I swear God is doing the leading! After reading a few, I realized that I had experienced several of the same symptoms. Nausea? Check! Stomach cramps? Check! Diarrhea? Check! Blurry vision? Check! The first symptom was definitely nausea, and there was no logical explanation for it. Prior to finding this website, I didn’t take the morning dose today and decided to stop them entirely for a couple of weeks. After reading every single post, I’m not swallowing another. They’re going back to Costco!"

"My mother has taken AREDS for years. They recently changed to a brighter red gel pill. Since then, she has been in and out of hospitals for gas, abdominal pain, and inability to eat due to heartburn and a “full feeling.” She was labeled as “failure to thrive.” We stopped the AREDS, and she was better within a week."

"I took this drug for about 7 years, and during that time, I felt almost constantly unwell with stomach pain, gastritis, fatigue, hand bruising, nausea, and more. I had many tests, but doctors could not figure out what was causing my problems. Finally, one doctor suggested that I stop taking PreserVision AREDS 2 for 2 weeks, and within 3 days, I felt so much better...even my hands stopped bruising. I think it's the massive amount of zinc (80 mg) that one gets each day with the 2 capsules that caused my problem. Now I'm taking lutein and trying to get more zinc in my diet. There should be more information available about the pros and cons of this vitamin!"

"Been taking Bausch & Lomb AREDS 2 for one week. I have experienced more than normal acid reflux and lots of belching. My eye floaters have become more noticeable. I have experienced an increase in blurry vision, but the worst side effect is severe tightness in my lower back. I thought maybe I had hurt my back or had somehow gotten a kidney infection. Now, after reading other reviews, I'm pretty sure the problem is related to these PreserVision vitamins. I am going to stop taking them immediately."

"I started taking PreserVision 2 weeks ago. After taking one pill in the morning and one in the evening, I became very nauseous. Took recommended dosage for 2 more days and still became very nauseous. I have glaucoma and was hoping this would help. Also, my vision has become blurry, my left eye is sensitive to light, and I had muscle weakness, hot flashes, and night sweats. This stuff is horrible. I have stopped taking it but still have some nausea. Hopefully, it will be better soon. The FDA needs to inspect the ingredients or how it's made!"

"My retina specialist gave me a one-day sample of PreserVision AREDS 2 to start taking for macular degeneration in my right eye. After breakfast this morning, I took my first one and almost immediately felt sick with nausea, fatigue, near vomiting, and a slight temperature. I'm glad I checked here for reviews... no more for me!!!"

"My mom was prescribed this medication for her macular degeneration. She was 84 at the time. Poor thing, the first night she took one pill, she was doubled over in so much abdominal pain she couldn't sleep at all. I couldn't imagine why something for your eye would cause some abdominal pain. However, it was the only thing she had taken differently when the pain started. So we knew it was that. A few weeks later, I decided to try it myself. I had such intense cramping in my abdomen, I couldn't even stand up straight. So based on the reaction my mother and I got, this medication dose is too high for people to take. They need to figure out the dose that will still work to help with the eye diseases, but doesn't cause you to double over in agony from abdominal pain!"

"Dr. said I needed cataract surgery. So, I decided to have the surgery on both eyes. During my first visit, for the pre-op eye exam, the optometrist recommended AREDS 2. I've been on the AREDS for 18 months and have just come into some unstable blood pressure readings. [I take no BP meds]. I mistakenly was only taking 1 tab a day. Started on 2 recently. [Up until I started the 2 tab dosage, I had no BP abnormalities.] Seeing these comments from others, I have linked the stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, blurred vision, headaches, upset stomach I am experiencing to this drug. My situation may be unique in that I take an over 50 multivitamin, 5000u D3, 99mg potassium, glucosamine/chondroitin. Vitamin overload? My daughter, a RN, has warned me about excessive potassium. Can cause heart issues. I am discontinuing the AREDS. HTH,"

"As my husband takes a lot of medicines, it was hard to tell which started his thankfully past illness. He started getting mouth ulcers. We went to the ER, they sent him home, though it was canker sores and would go away. After that, he became dehydrated and nauseous, finally in the hospital again for 6 days diagnosed with diverticulitis. I couldn't find the correlation until I was reading these reviews. He was taking these 2 times a day for 2 weeks before onset. Again, not sure yet if these caused it, but to be safe rather than sorry. Throwing out an appointment with the eye doctor coming up."

"It is most likely the zinc causing nausea, but could also be vitamin A. I have a very sensitive digestive system, and I can take Lutein 40 mg, Zeaxanthin, Vitamin C 1000 mg, and E with no issues. If your doctor insists, at least try the vitamins other than zinc and A and see how you feel. Some are better than none!"

"I'm so sick right now, I don't really like typing this review. I bought a bottle of 120 PreserVision, per my eye dr. orders. I do have M.D. Last night I counted what was left in the bottle. I have taken 28 caplets. I have only been taking one a day. I have been so sick every day. Sick at my stomach, stomach pain, very weak, very tired, my back and joints hurting to the point I have had to use pain meds. I have been to the ER with horrible pain in the middle of my back around to my side and chest. It wasn't a heart issue. My vitals were okay and my blood test was okay. I'm a person who was walking 2 miles most days of the week. I can't now. I have low back pain, leg pain, and heel pain. I have felt very unwell every day since the day I started taking AREDS 2. I can't swear that all these problems are caused by PreserVision, but after reading these reviews I'm not taking more. I told my eye dr. about my problems taking P.V. AREDS 2, he told me to keep taking them."

"I am a senior. When I got an eye test, the doctor told me I had little inklings of this, that, and the other, but that I still had 20/20 vision. He recommended PreserVision AREDS 2. When I received the bottle, I looked at the 'ingredients' on the back and dosages. I was very surprised at the amounts of zinc, especially. So I got on the internet and looked up what the FDA's daily recommendation was for zinc. According to what I read, the level of zinc is at the toxic level. That scares me. Taking one pill a day seems like the maximum the FDA says is enough. Taking two pills a day puts the amount well over the safe recommendation. I will only take one pill a day to hopefully avoid any of the side effects. I will do more investigating. There has to be something else.."

"The AREDS 2 I have been taking for over a month now. I do not have any eye problems except for a slight cataract in one eye. I’m basically taking it as a precautionary measure. I have found that in general my vision has improved some and my eyes are not red in the morning. The cap is easy to swallow, and I take it with a full glass of water. I have to time it perfectly as to the timing of any dairy, antacids, and calcium consumption. I feel that it is doing good!"

"I had been taking it for seven months and noticed issues with my eyes: more blurry vision and ghosting when looking at white text on a dark background on my phone, like when checking the weather app. My eyes seem tired and felt funny. Then I got a floater for the first time. That’s when I found this forum and started reading about other side effects: constipation. Yep. Headaches. Yep. I also started having a floating feeling in my head. It all sent me to the doctor to rule out causes. I’ve stopped taking this and have started feeling better. Anyone experience the ghosting? That’s the one thing I didn’t read here."

"I became nauseous within ten minutes of taking these. I experienced severe bloating. I drank water slowly, as well as sparkling water, hoping to tamp down the nausea. I laid down for ten minutes but needed to race to the bathroom with terrible diarrhea, followed by four vomiting episodes a few minutes later. This all came on within 30 minutes of taking these caplets with food and water. Ninety minutes later and I still have stomach aches, bloating, diarrhea. I took two at the same time. That could be the reason I’m so ill, but I will report this to my doctor and never take them again. Whether these are effective, I’ll never know."

"I was told to take this for my AMD and have had horrible nausea, heartburn, constipation, muscle problems. I had no idea it could have been caused by the PreserVision! I will immediately stop taking them, as I haven’t felt well since the day I started taking them! Hope I don’t go blind but can’t continue feeling like this!"

"Have been taking AREDS2 for over three years. One pill twice a day with a meal. My left eye is wet AMD, and the doctor told me, and what I read was that AREDS2 will not help wet AMD. My right eye is dry and has remained dry with these pills. Never had any bad side effects, but I follow the directions too. Very pleased."

"I have been taking this medication for about 3 weeks. I like to read, and that is getting bad. My vision is blurred, making it impossible to do even with my reading glasses, which I don't always use. This stuff is junk, it affects my sleep and my daily activities. I am tired all the time."

"I took my first dose an hour ago, felt nauseous within 30 minutes and was vomiting ten minutes later. I have vomited five times in the first hour. It was scary because the gel cap and its contents are red, so my first thought was that I was vomiting blood (I wasn’t). Now I am sitting here wondering when this will end and whether or not I should be trying to drink lots of water to flush it out of my system or encourage more vomiting to get it all out. The level of vitamin E is no higher than vitamin E doses that I have taken in the past. It could be the night dose of zinc, or maybe just a reaction to the marigold or other ingredient in their product. I am also wishing I hadn’t bought the 210 count bottle. It’s only 7 pm, but it feels like this is going to be a long night. Hoping the nausea passes soon."

"My doctor recommended this eye supplement to protect my eyes from the beginnings of macular degeneration, which is currently stable. I take one tablet with breakfast and one with dinner and have done so for about one month. Well, I haven’t been sleeping soundly since taking these red pills. I’ll sleep for two or three hours and then need to use the bathroom, and then two or three more hours of sleep, etc. I’m glad I found others on this site with sleep issues due to the red pill! I’m going to stop taking it."

"I began taking these as directed on the box. Have had this dull migraine ever since. Migraine is dull because I've been taking my Nurtec for it. Nurtec normally kicks my migraines' butt, but when it didn't, I began to wonder if it was these supplements. So glad I came across this site! I now know it was being caused by a reaction to the AREDS 2. The nausea wasn't from my migraine, as I had thought too. It was from this supplement. So thankful for everyone who has shared their experiences here, as it is preventing me from the continued misery being caused by this supplement. If I hadn't come across this site & thread, I would have continued thinking my body either needed to adjust to the supplement or was experiencing an out-of-the-normal migraine episode."

"I just wanted to improve my eyesight, and my mom recommended AREDS 2. Never taken them consistently, but experienced nausea every time, especially if I took it on an empty stomach. Two days ago, I took my regular vitamins, which consist of vitamin D and iron, and a few minutes later, took an AREDS 2 and got horribly sick. I had severe stomach cramps and nausea, I couldn’t get out of bed I was in so much pain. After taking Prilosec and a Nexium, I managed to feel a little better that evening. The next day, every time I tried to eat or drink water, my stomach began to cramp, and I experienced extreme dehydration and joint pain no matter how much water I drank. Hopefully, the worst is over, will never take those again! They should be taken off the market or have some serious warnings on them!"

"Same experience as 'BabwinPa.' I took 2x a day AREDS 2 as suggested by my ophthalmologist. One week later, I started nosebleeds and had major intestinal cramps. I found out here, after the fact, that I was not the only one. I trashed them."
