"I have major depressive disorder. I have suffered very low energy since I was 12 due to depression. Sleeping or laying in bed for 16 hours was normal for me. I was on 200 mg each morning in combination with antidepressants and a sleeping pill at night. I noticed no side effects from modafinil. I am no longer on this medication because it did not help with my depression, just helped with a symptom of my depression (low energy). I was put on an MAOI antidepressant and therefore could not continue with this medication due to interactions. But it did give me energy."

"Here is a shortened version of your text, edited to fit within 1106 characters while trying to preserve the core message and insights from your experience with modafinil: Modafinil discussion centers on its effects, which I've linked to my psychology. In summary: modafinil prompts action but not happiness, acting like a mild cocaine by making the mind overly goal-oriented. It's useful in dark times for mental rewiring but may lead to habituation and obsession. As a non-amphetamine, modafinil affects dopamine not by direct receptor binding, which avoids severe comedowns. Instead, it inhibits dopamine reuptake, enhancing focus and motivation without extreme highs and lows. Subjectively, it provides a momentum feeling, crucial for depression relief by aiding task completion, which counters depressive cycles. However, long-term use shifted my focus from presence to goal-orientation, impacting social connections and emotional depth."

"I was extremely hopeful upon reading the raving reviews about Modafinil for depression, especially for initiative and motivation. I was practically expecting it would work, so if anything, I was the perfect candidate for the placebo effect. But it was not to be. I took up to 200 mg but found it to have no effects at all on my depression. It actually made me slightly anxious and agitated. Though, it does work very well with making you stay awake and alert."

"I had depression for 35 years, and I think most of it was from gross overwork, some of which I am responsible. When I retired early, I was quite a bit less depressed, but still rather depressed (perhaps it was residual depression). ECT helped somewhat, but I still could not function on a regular basis. I started taking 100-200mg of Provigil on those days that I was particularly depressed, and it lifted my mood enough to function well. This is one of those times when the much-overused word 'gamechanger' is fully applicable."

"I use several antidepressants, and I cannot function without them. Modafinil helped with my chronic fatigue, but it's not an antidepressant, in my opinion. I can do a lot of things now. I'm so glad I heard about it. I take 200 mg a day."

"Depressive mood with the ability to function well, but have noted a significant improvement in mood since prescribed. Thankfully. Have to monitor the amount I take and should not mix with strong coffee."

"Modafinil makes me feel human. I take it for depression, fatigue, lack of concentration, and mood swings. It lifts my mood and helps me concentrate on my work with single-minded focus. It also helps with my mood swings. I have never once found myself overthinking when I'm on modafinil. It does make me slightly irritable sometimes, though. It also helps me be optimistic and enthusiastic about my work."

"I’m diagnosed with depression and ADHD. After various research, I asked my doctor if I could try modafinil, and he agreed, so I started taking it at the 100 mg dose. In the first days, this medicine felt like a miracle. I was extremely energized, focused, motivated, and happy in general. My only side effects were a lack of appetite and insomnia if I took this medicine too late. Unfortunately, this drug builds tolerance really fast, and after just 1 week, all those positive effects disappeared, and the drug didn’t have any effect anymore. I won’t advise taking this drug for long-term usage; however, if you space out your doses and take it 1-2 times a week, the effects will be much stronger and can help you go through the day, so maybe that’s the most appropriate strategy."

"It was a strong drug. It had the side effect of leaving me tired and very depleted the following day, far more than a small 5 mg of Ritalin did. The only caveat is I took Valium at bedtime. This may have messed with the Provigil to the degree that it may have messed with my system. I think this entry is valuable. Benzodiazepines do not appear to be useful in combination with Provigil or Modafinil. Days when I did not take benzodiazepines the following days were pretty normal. The important entry I want to contribute is to say that the days following a Provigil day were the ones that were the most productive. I was far more 'on' after the drug wore off. I felt like a younger, faster version of myself, days even a week later. 100 mg dose."

"I have been on modafinil for three weeks. Was previously on fluoxetine for a year, self-prescribed for apparent depression. I stopped fluoxetine cold turkey three weeks back and put myself on modafinil. I have carried on well since. Tried stopping fluoxetine suddenly previously also without any replacement drug, but got severe mood disturbances and wasn't successful. Modafinil has been helping me for good ever since. But I started having serious side effects since last week: severe muscle cramps, mainly in calves, backaches, pain in the right scapular region, shortness of breath, mild headaches, increased sexual desire. I am happy on the drug, but leg cramps, pain in the scapular region, and shortness of breath are making it miserable. I may stop modafinil due to the side effects."

"I think I might be the only person in the world having no beneficial effect on this drug. I took 50 mg Modalert and I never felt so bad in my life: I was paranoid, anxious, had several serious suicidal thoughts, headache, and nausea. I kept feeling bad for the next 24 hours. I feel so disappointed and sad, I was hoping that moda could have helped me."

"A complete game changer. I stopped taking modafinil for a few days and became extremely stressed and depressed. Started taking them again and feel amazing. Not sure why everyone isn’t given modafinil instead of antidepressants and other drugs."

"My depression is responsible for a sleeping disorder that makes it very hard for me to stay awake and functional. I have some kind of hypersomnia instead of the regular insomnia complaints patients have. Even though there are people that respond nicely to modafinil, I didn't feel anything while associating 200 mg of it to my SSRI. I couldn't notice any improvement to my sleeping cycle or to my concentration. Side effects were absent too. Unfortunately, it was not for me."

"I have been working for many years with one combination after another of medications for bipolar disorder. I was recently on oxcarbazepine and lithium, which was great for a few months. Depression came back, and I had unpleasant side effects with the oxcarbazepine. My doc added modafinil. It reduced the side effects and improved my depression. It also caused irritability, and caffeine made me restless even with a small amount."

"Modafinil is a life changer for me. I am a 47-year-old high-functioning autistic with crossover symptoms of ADHD. I have also dealt with severe anxiety and moderate depression all my life and have tried every benzo, amphetamine, and antidepressant in the book. So, my doc suggested modafinil. My god, this is the drug for me. It has instantly turned me into the person I always wanted to be, and I wonder if this is what normal people feel like every day. Within an hour of taking this pill, I am focused, upbeat, motivated, outgoing, full of energy without the racing heart and mania, and can go all day long (literally from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm) and love every minute of it. Best of all, there are zero side effects aside from mild insomnia, which I am able to overcome with a small sleeping pill at bedtime. It has also nearly eliminated my alcohol cravings. I wish I had known of this drug 30 years ago. Even my wife has noticed the change, and she's very happy with it!"

"It helped me get off of a 50-year history of major depression. Every time I tried to quit amitriptyline, I would have unbearable crushing abdominal pain. My doctor had me try pregabalin. The depression left almost immediately. Fatigue became a problem, so he had a 50 mg dose of modafinil. Now, I no longer need the pregabalin. Some insomnia occurs, but all in all, this has been a miracle in my life."

"I have found with NDRI drugs like methylphenidate and drugs like modafinil to induce depression. As someone with dyslexia and ADHD, what I find is that the normal sense of euphoria I gain from normal things like listening to music and just generally being alive is gone, which induces a state of depression and suicidal thoughts. I am not finding much on this effect, though, and I am wondering if it's mainly due to dopamine reuptake inhibitors causing the issue entirely. Perhaps my issue is not the lack of dopamine but the conversion of tyrosine into dopamine. I have no idea, and I wish I knew because 100 mg (200 mg+ makes this worse) is very effective for ADHD and hypersomnia."
