For Insomnia "So I finally took mirtazapine last night (15 mg). I have been addicted to zopiclone sleeping tablets previously and was taking sertraline. Now off both the zopiclone and sertraline, I take the mirtazapine and I can report much better sleep, probably got 7-8 hours. Some strange dreams, but I’d rather that than no sleep at all. It’s now half past 1 in the afternoon, feeling drowsy still and really hungry. Weighing things up, I would much rather feel like this than before when I was having panic attacks and not sleeping. Hopefully, these side effects stop soon, and then I will be really impressed :)"

Mirtazapine for Major Depressive Disorder "So far, I'm very happy as my nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and anxiety have subsided. Not much relief from depression yet on day 5, but I understand it takes time. It does make my tongue numb for a bit after I take it, and I've had vivid dreams every night on it."

For Depression "I really like mirtazapine so far, and I’ve been on it for about 2 years. Aside from a little bit of grogginess on wakeup, which is gone in 30 minutes, I don’t feel like it has many downsides. No problems under the belt makes this an ideal antidepressant for my age and lifestyle, and although I did put on 15 pounds, I’m gonna chalk half of that up to quarantine. There will be 3 weeks of weird dreams while you adjust, and you might get angry a little easier during that period too — but it goes away. In my opinion, the best non-SSRI antidepressant for everyone who doesn’t also have anger problems."

For Anxiety "I have been on mirtazapine 15 mg for almost one week now. At first, it has been completely knocking me out, having an amazing night’s sleep but then waking up feeling like I’d not slept at all! It has been difficult getting up in the mornings, have been feeling drowsy in the day, finding it difficult to concentrate, and I have also had really vivid dreams. BUT I’ve instantly felt more relaxed, and the side effects are starting to wear off. For the first time, my mind feels quiet and no more panic attacks, and I am also starting to feel better since it gives me such a good night’s sleep. Hopefully, it will carry on this way for me and I hope it has helped somebody else. Thumbs up from me."

For Major Depressive Disorder "Twelve weeks in using Mirtazapine for clinical depression, or MDD. My disorder started in January 2020. I am now taking 15 mg at night and sleep 8/9 hours. I had a couple of vivid dreams in the beginning, but no longer. I wake up energized. I run high energy, so my anxiety is still present but not as severe. I’m able to supplement .25 mg/day of Clonazepam, taken PRN. Hoping I will need this less and less given more time. Also, I’m trying to regain some weight, but it seems I’ve leveled for now. I eat a healthy whole food plant-based diet, so calories are low. Also, I eat smaller portions than I used to. I will have to remain on Mirtazapine indefinitely, and I’m good with that if it continues to help me have better days and nights."

For Insomnia "I've been on it for 8 months after the dentist told me I was grinding my teeth at night. Post-lymphoma cancer patient, so it's been a rough few years. I'm on 15 mg tabs. It's been fine, but after 4 months, I noticed it's getting harder to lose weight. Not sure if it's my age, 59, or partly the medication. My worry is getting off it. I tend to go cold turkey and have noticed I don't sleep well when I stop. I have vivid dreams for a while. I do sleep better when on it, but it does change the feeling of connection with things around me. Only slight, but noticeable. I find it a bit worrying to be reliant on a pill, and I'm seeing it's going to take a while to get off it. Although not addictive, I can see it can be emotionally addictive."

For Major Depressive Disorder "Nine months ago, I was prescribed this in combination with venlafaxine to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety, and complex PTSD. Initially, I did not notice any side effects, but about three months in, I suddenly gained so much weight that none of my clothes fit. It seemed to almost happen overnight, and whilst I was struggling with the fact that I had nothing to wear, I started to get hot flushes, pee my pants without realizing, and sweat like a sauna at random moments, especially in my groin area. Lovely. Add to that - memory loss, freaky (exhausting) dreams, fingernails that split if you look at them, and trembling hands... what do you get? A fat, sweaty, smelly, trembly lump who is now too depressed and anxious to even go out the front door. I quit."

For Anxiety "Well, for such a tiny pill, this sure packs a punch! After complaining of an irregular sleep pattern that I simply could not break no matter what I did during the course of my day, my doctor prescribed 15 mg mirtazapine to be taken half an hour before bed. Most nights now, I sleep right through, and it is quality sleep I am getting. Since overcoming the mild grogginess I experienced during the initial uptake, I have found this medication works very well in combination with 112.5 mg venlafaxine, which I take in the morning for depression. The main side effects for me are massive carbohydrate cravings (I piled on weight before I knew it) and regular bizarre dreams, which at first I found quite disturbing but now kind of look forward to having."

For Insomnia "My side effects: gain tons of weight, feel always hungry, tremor, strange and scary dreams; shortness of breath, the scariest one out of all; cholesterol level went up. Helped with falling asleep and staying asleep, but not worth to deal with so many side effects. I do not recommend this product!"

For Insomnia "My doctor prescribed mirtazapine 15 mg every night at bedtime to replace the Ambien 10 mg due to all the hoopla about combining Ambien with opioid medications. So far, the mirtazapine has NOT been effective in giving me a full night of uninterrupted sleep like Ambien did. Also, I have had weird/bizarre dreams since taking the mirtazapine. When I talked with my doctor about it, she prescribed another sleep aid that has a copay of $156.00! So I will have to settle for what the mirtazapine offers as I had to choose between Ambien and my narcotic pain medication for my chronic back pain. Sigh..."

For Insomnia "Have dealt with chronic insomnia for 20+ years. I've tried every pharmaceutical option for sleep, and this is one of the few drugs I've found that works and continues to work. There are some side effects (extreme hunger, irritability the next day, strange dreams), but they seem to go away after a month or so. I don't take it every night (I'm afraid it will stop working), but have taken it nightly for several months and it never lost its effectiveness. I currently cycle between 15 mg Remeron and 3 mg Xanax, making sure I leave 2 days in between each. So if I take Remeron on Monday, I won't take it again until Thursday, then Xanax on Tuesday and not again until Friday. Then Remeron again Sunday and Xanax Monday and so on and so on. This seems to work well for me, and I don't develop a tolerance to either drug. I'm currently trying to find a 3rd option that isn't related to either Xanax or Remeron, but unfortunately there aren't many options."

For Depression "I've been on mirtazapine 45 mg dose for a year now. It worked great at first, but going on the higher dose caused anxiety. I've piled on the weight, I'm constantly hungry, which makes me anxious as well. I can eat a meal and be fine, then all of a sudden, I'm hungry like I've not been fed for a week. Also, the nightmares are terrible, so it really takes me a while to calm down when I finally wake. A lot of people suffer the nightmares and weird vivid dreams. I'm working to come off it. It's great for anxiety, I'm prescribed diazepam 28 mg a day as well, so they probably help as well. I advise anyone to read up on it before taking it if the plan is for long-term use, speak to your doctor. I've put on 2 stone, I can't be putting on anymore. It once helped, now it makes me miserable having to take it, and the withdrawals are rotten and lengthy, especially on my dose."

For Depression "I'm sleeping for over 20 hours! I cannot believe how long I am sleeping! All day and night. I won't be taking it anymore. I'm going to speak to my doctor and care coordinator about this. The dreams I'm having are crazy. I've seen people comment on the fact that people have said they're sleeping too long. Don't comment on others, just comment on your own experience. My experience is I'm sleeping all day and all night. I've just woken up now at 22:45!"

For Depression "I have mild depression and have been taking mirtazapine for a little over a month. Side effects: Irritability - increased agitation with a lack of patience. Extreme sedation - taking the medication before bed helps offset this feeling. Lucid dreams - long vivid dreams. Difficulty waking - it's challenging to wake up in the morning, but once I am up and moving, I am fine. Increased appetite - particularly craving high-calorie foods and sweets (both of which I do not normally desire). I also have the desire to overeat. Increased motivation - oddly, I have the strong desire to continually accomplish tasks. This is not who I have been my entire life. Large effect. Medium effect. Mild effect."

Mirtazapine for Depression "I started this medicine 7 days ago. I have anxiety and depression. I have taken Prozac for almost 11 years, and I really couldn't tell any difference this past year. So now I'm trying different medicines that might help me. So I have tried Celexa, Effexor, and now Remeron. The first day was okay, I felt really relaxed and hungry. Then after the 2nd day, I started feeling really weird, like my heart is jumping and my body moves with it, also, my dreams are very weird. They are about me dreaming. It really scared me, so I quit taking it."

For Insomnia "I started this medication 6 weeks ago on the advice of my GP, and this seemed like a good option. The very first tablet knocked me out for about 10 hours. The next few days included very vivid dreams, and I was quite sleepy in the morning. Unfortunately, after a few weeks, the effects tapered off, and now I am back where I started with the insomnia. My doctor advised upping the dose to 30 mg, but so far this hasn't improved things. If others have found a way to restore the fantastic sleep effects of the drug, do let me know. In summary, worth a try but don't assume beneficial effects will last."

For Depression "I have been taking mirtazapine for 2 weeks now after trying several other medications for anxiety and depression. At first, I felt very jet-lagged, but my goodness, they knocked me out cold at night. I have to take it in the early evening, or I won't wake up till late morning the next day. I have little energy but have been eating like a horse. I have gained about a stone in 2 weeks, but it was also the Christmas period. I start 30 mg from tomorrow, my starting dose was 15 mg, and I will also start my diet. My mood has improved, and my anxiety has reduced, but I feel unbalanced and have almost fallen over at times. I have also had strange dreams. I will do another update in about a month, I will see how I feel after taking 30 mg."

For Anxiety "I am 23. I went on Mirt after trying Zoloft and a few other antidepressants in the past. I was having extreme health anxiety and nocturnal panic attacks; basically, anxiety that completely took over my life. Compared to the side effects Zoloft gave me, Mirtazapine was amazing at first. It was like an instant calming effect after taking it. I stopped having the nocturnal panic attacks... However, I have hypersomnia and went from panic to oversleeping and bad dreams. Sadly, it was just too much for me. If you have insomnia, I bet this med would be perfect for you... It was great for my anxiety. Unfortunately, I had to switch. Give it a try, though! I loved it besides the sleep issue."

Mirtazapine "I was on Remeron for anxiety and insomnia, and honestly, I wish I hadn't gone off it. The main reason my doctor took me off of it was that I was having bad nightmares, but every sleep medication I take seems to give me weird dreams. It did increase my appetite and gave me a lot more energy. I really wished I never went off this medication, maybe I would try it again. It helped me sleep and did help my anxiety."

For Anxiety "I was previously on escitalopram (10 mg) but was experiencing sexual dysfunction as a side effect. After discussing this with my psychiatrist, I was put on 30 mg of mirtazapine. After reading some of the reviews, I was reluctant about changing but started my new treatment 5 days ago. So far, so good. My sexual functioning has returned, I'm feeling generally more relaxed and carefree, and am also fine in the mornings. I used to suffer in the mornings, which would destroy my whole day and result in severe depression, suicidal thoughts, and massive anxiety. Drawbacks are that I'm getting some really weird dreams and feel hungry a whole lot more, also dizzy, and it sometimes takes me a while to sleep."

For Insomnia "My doctor prescribed this for insomnia. I also take paroxetine for depression and anxiety, plus birth control meds for PMDD, and one tiny dose of Xanax before bed. This stuff was so intense, I can't quite believe I went through the experience. I rapidly gained 30 lbs.! I could not stop eating and didn't care, even though I knew it wasn't good for me. I also slept all day as well as at night, often in what felt like a semi-awake state but without being able to move and super vivid, bizarre dreams."

For Anxiety "Was prescribed for anxiety. I don't get anxiety daily, but certain situations cause horrible anxiety and panic, so the doctor thought this might keep me calmer overall to avoid moments of panic. Started on 7.5 mg for 6 days. The first few days on that felt like I was on a low dose of diazepam. Then I felt nothing. Increased to 15 mg for three weeks. Noticed I still felt anxious in the same situations. Upped to 22.5 mg. Anxiety felt worse. Went back down to 15 mg and tapering off it. No withdrawal symptoms lowering the dose. Currently on 7.5 mg at 5 weeks of being on this. I sleep deeply on it but have very vivid dreams. I've experienced sleep paralysis one night, which was scary. Some other horrible dreams too, occasionally. Have had increased appetite."

Mirtazapine for Depression "I have been on Remeron for almost two months with daily Celexa 40 mg. The depression seems to be better, but I have vivid, exhausting dreams. I fall asleep fast and stay asleep. It has helped my appetite. I lost weight when depression started. Finally, seeing a real psychiatrist to discuss this. My PCP has been prescribing."

For Anxiety "I've taken this for depression/anxiety for 12 days. I take 15 mg before bed, and now sleep 11 hours, it was 3-6 hrs max before. I am worried about some side effects. I was given the type that melts on your tongue, they numbed my mouth for 20 mins, like a local anesthetic. They've been changed to the normal pills now, so better. I use a Fitbit, and I've noticed my resting heart rate has risen from 61-64, constant for years, to 75-76 for the last 12 days (the period I've been on mirtazapine). I mentioned it to my doc, who has booked me in for a CT scan. I have a small arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) I've had for years, so a bit worried. I also have strange tingling, like a constant small electric shock inside my mouth on the left side, not painful, just annoying. I also get some vivid dreams (that's ok, I like dreams!). I don't seem to get the big appetite everyone mentions. If anything, I've less of an appetite. Has anyone else had the increase in heart rate that you've noticed or recorded?"
