"I drank coffee with cream and sugar, and I’m a lactose intolerant person. I felt bloated, constipation, and pain in my stomach. It was time to eat a Lactaid pill. I ate two and got even more sick. I had diarrhea all evening, and my stomach was in pain. I was thinking, what if I didn’t take the pill and just let it run its course? It’s good to know there are others out there that have issues with the pill, leaving me not alone."

Lactase "The first time I took this, I experienced extreme stomach ache, believing that my body was just not used to it. A few hours later, I experienced diarrhea. I was very confused, but I used it again the next few days, and the second time, it did the same thing. The only difference was I experienced horrible vomiting, my throat was burning so bad I was in horrible pain. After doing some research about it, many people have experienced the same thing. DON’T BUY THEM, NOT WORTH IT."

"I usually take the Equate brand of Lactaid (usually 2 pills depending on the amount of dairy I'm going to eat with the first bite of said dairy), and I had very little to no problems when taking it. But I bought the name brand Lactaid and did the same thing when taking the pills, yet I've been sick for 3 days with bloating, gas, and diarrhea. My rating reflects the use of the name brand Lactaid, not the Equate version."

"My mom bought these for me a while ago. I was hesitant to try, as I’d read some pretty bad reviews. I have lactose intolerance, it’s not life-debilitating (usually just gives me diarrhea or stomach pain), but sometimes I just want some dairy! So finally, a few weeks ago, I gave them a try. They worked, so I tried them maybe 3 other times. Then, last week, oh man. I tried them with my dinner (pasta with creamy sauce), and 2 hours later, when I got home, I had severe back pain, nausea, the shakes, etc. I vomited for the first time as an adult. I had about 3 sessions, puking 10 times altogether, and diarrhea too. I thought I had food poisoning! Fast forward to today, a week later, I wanted cheese, so I had lactaid again because I figured my illness was from food. Exactly 2 hours later, my back began to hurt, and I ended up experiencing the EXACT same thing. I’m sitting here now, still shaky. DO NOT USE THESE. This is 10,000 times worse than ANY effect I’ve had from dairy. Feel better, everyone."

Lactase "After taking 1 dose of lactase enzyme supplement 9000 units along with some ice cream, I felt sick to my stomach. I had stomach pains, nausea, just an overall feeling of sickness which lasted for most of the day."

"The first time I took this pill, I didn't experience any side effects. Then I took the chewable a week later, and I had the worst experience that I have had in my life! I was extremely nauseous, weak, shaking, had the chills, and had severe diarrhea. I thought I had gotten sick or something, so I tried the pill again, this time, the side effects were way worse and extreme. I was vomiting so badly, had stomach cramps, couldn't sleep from the pain, weak, shaking, I felt like I was going to pass out. I would recommend this product to anybody."

Lactase "I have a mild lactose intolerance. I had a cheeseburger a few days ago, which usually only gives me a small stomachache, but about 15 minutes after taking this, I had a MASSIVE one. The next day, I thought that maybe it didn’t work because I chewed it. So I tried it again with some yogurt (which gives me a pretty bad stomachache but not crazy), and once again, MASSIVE stomachache. DO NOT TAKE THIS!"

"I've been trying these out for a change because I missed eating cheese. It seems to have worked well, so I have been taking them for about 2 days straight (about 2-3 each time). I've been getting small bouts of nausea. I'm writing this because I just ate another one with a pizza, and all of a sudden I felt a strong wave of nausea come over me. Like I was going to throw up, and my stomach upset. I wanted to go to sleep, so I grabbed a bucket. It is a weird sensation. And all day I feel like I have a stomach bug. I didn't link anything until I Googled lactaid and vomiting. I'm disappointed."

"After giving my son this pill and sending him off to school, we received a call within 2 hours that he was throwing up with chills! His body temp dropped. After vomiting within a few hours, he was okay, we didn’t put two and two together until tonight. Prior to eating, we gave him the pill again, and sure enough, two hours later he is vomiting and extremely nauseous. We did a search on the pills and are shocked to see so many other people dealing with the same symptoms. My wife actually said one of the ingredients is another name for formaldehyde! I don’t know how this stuff is on the shelf, and I’m extremely upset over it! Something needs to be done to stop them from continuing to sell this and cause harm to others!"

"I've used lactase enzyme since 1993, 30 years, initially in liquid drop form that was added to food or used to reduce lactose in milk overnight. Drops are no longer available in the States, but the pill/caplets are. I've never reacted adversely to them, but it did take some adjustment of dosage to accommodate my severe lactose intolerance. I'd noticed some reduced effectiveness over the past few years only to realize the Lactaid brand I was buying wasn't the Extra Strength I'd previously used. I've given these to friends and family members over the years for either suspected/known lactose intolerance or during GI viral illness, and none have ever had bad reactions. What's interesting is reading about the severe N/V/D experienced by so many here from lactase, which is not mentioned in any literature by NIH, Mayo Clinic, or Cleveland Clinic. N/V/D are well-known to be symptoms of lactose intolerance. Very strange. I hope more studies are done to investigate this phenomenon."

"Today was the first time I took one lactase pill because someone told me I might be lactose intolerant. I ended up with terrible diarrhea. I thought I was better off eating dairy, which did not give me such terrible diarrhea."

"My son is 10 years old, and we have suspected a lactose intolerance for a few years and confirmed it this year. We tried this 3 times, and every time he ended up vomiting. :( The 1st time, I thought he had a stomach virus and dismissed the correlation with him trying lactase. He can tolerate very small amounts of dairy, it seems, without major issues. Maybe this is why the enzyme doesn't seem to work for him if he's able to break down small amounts?"

"I had a problem with name brand Lactaid if I took it more than once a day. Then I read the ingredients. It contains maltitol. That gives me bloating, gut pain, and terrible gas. However, Equate has a type that doesn't taste good but has no maltitol, and it works fine. I can take it several times a day, and it doesn't bother me. Puritan's Pride also has one that you do not chew without maltitol. I know that any of the 'ol' artificial sweeteners have the effect of bloating, gut pain, and terrible gas."

"I've been lactose intolerant since my early 20s. I used to take lactase back then and thought it just didn't work well for me. Then one day I took some and ended up vomiting up the ice cream I ate. I figured my intolerance was just that bad, and I've avoided dairy entirely since. Recently, I ordered dairy-free dip, and my shopper accidentally grabbed the wrong one. I eat cheese with no issues and thought, maybe I'll get some lactase and try with this, so it doesn't go to waste. I took 2, ate some dip, and felt bloated and nauseous after. I thought, maybe I just need to take more next time. Horrible mistake. It's a few days later. I took 4 and ate some dip and I've been violently ill since. Vomiting, cramping, nausea, diarrhea...I've not been this sick in years. I will never touch lactase again."

"I have lactose intolerance. I love ice cream, but it gives me diarrhea. Eating cereal in milk gives me lots of gas for about 12 hours. I tried the Kroger brand of lactase pills twice. Both times, I had incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The only reason I tried it a second time is that I thought the gastrointestinal problem must have been caused by something else. Next, I tried Lactaid while eating ice cream, thinking that another brand might produce different results. No! It was every bit as bad. Interestingly, I can drink Kroger's lactose-free milk, which contains lactase, with no symptoms. Interestingly, I can eat cheese and yogurt and not have any symptoms, which is good because I also love pizza and the convenience and nutrition of Greek yogurt. I tried Breyer's lactose-free ice cream. No vomiting, but lots of diarrhea and gas, just as though it was regular ice cream."

"I have NEVER had such a violent reaction to anything in my life as I had when taking these. Uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea within 45 minutes of taking 2 tablets. Unfortunately, I was in a car and had no access to a washroom. It was terrible, to say the least. My advice, if you want to try them, is to take only one tablet before eating dairy and be in the comfort of your own home! I learned my lesson the hard way and will be trying lactose-free dairy products in the future."

"I took a few OTC lactase enzyme tablets, and I had diarrhea and vomiting. The doctor thought it was due to food poisoning, then maybe COVID. After having had COVID, I went out at lunch, took lactase again, and was nauseated, violently vomited, and barricaded in a public restroom. My husband called an ambulance 45 minutes later because I was weak, vomiting, shaking, and couldn’t stand, and my complexion was strangely bluish. At the hospital, I shivered uncontrollably, with no temperature (I note others mentioned this symptom). After a hospital exam, including an unremarkable ultrasound of the abdomen, I was released. To diagnose the cause of vomiting, my PCP referred me to an allergist who said the sudden, eruptive vomiting and shivering had not been an allergic reaction but could have been caused by lactose intolerance. So I tried full-dose lactase again with dairy. A few hours later, acute nausea led to sudden vomiting. Concerningly, some lactase supplements have 80% negative reviews here, which may indicate either new or undisclosed side effects."

"Do not take Lactaid. When I first ordered it, I was really hoping I had found the cure to my lactose intolerance, but after using it a few times and feeling bad both times, and ultimately puking my guts out today, I have learned this drug doesn't work. Don’t waste your money on it."

"After a few episodes of projectile vomiting on my way home from having a few cheese curds and a Lactaid pill, it's safe to say I will never take this drug again. So glad and also upset to have found all the other reviews that are so similar! The first few times I took it, there were no side effects. This third and final time was by far the worst!!"

"As sorry as I am to see so many have had severe vomiting, it's comforting to know that I'm not alone. I had a horrible experience with vomiting and the runs after taking Lactaid. That said, I don't agree with those calling for it to be taken off the market. My son uses this a couple of times a day, if not more, with no issues. His diet is heavy with dairy (for reasons that I'm not going to explain), and these pills have made it possible for him to eat. I'm glad they exist for him. I will never take another one, but they can be good for many people."

"After getting COVID, I noticed foods high in dairy would give me more diarrhea than usual, so my doctor suggested trying lactase. It helped a few times, and I thought all was well, until one night I was on the toilet for 3 hours. I thought it was just some unusually bad tacos, as it felt like food poisoning. The next day, same issue, I thought it was aftershocks or my milk had gone bad. About a week later, I was feeling better and took some with pizza, and it all happened AGAIN. Writing this from the bathroom. Wish I had done more research. I don't get how a simple enzyme can cause this, but I think my soul has left my body. AVOID."

"Bought these for my daughter. The first few days, she thought they were great. Then, every time she went to her boyfriend's place (big dairy-loving family), she would call to come home because she was vomiting. It took us a month to figure out it was these pills. She just avoids dairy now and finds other alternate 'milks' and ice creams."

Lactase "I have lactose intolerance and have used Lactaid for years. I get bloated and have a lot of gas. It makes me miserable and it’s embarrassing. I take 2 Lactaid chewables with my first bite of food and it works great! I either have NO symptoms or very little. I occasionally forget to take them and when I do it’s terrible so I know they help. I recommend them to people all the time."

Lactase "Lactaid has worked well for me. I ate some cheese, and my lactose intolerance kicked in severely. The next day, I tried Lactaid for the first time and ate the same cheese, and I experienced no stomach issues. Ever since then, I have used Lactaid, and it has worked very effectively. I have experienced no side effects."

"Violently ill each time I've tried it. Takes about 2 hours, then severe nausea kicks in. And then the projectile vomiting, along with explosive diarrhea - at the same time! Spent hours on the toilet with a puke bucket in my lap. Terrible stomach pains, chills, weakness too. Awful, awful. Trashing the rest of the box."
