"I am getting married in a few months, and at my last GYN appointment, I discussed not wanting to be on my period during my honeymoon and if I had any options to avoid that total buzzkill. So, I began taking Microgestin 1.5/30. In the first 10 days of taking it, I broke out in severe acne that included cysts, I became so moody that it can only accurately be described as a bipolar roller coaster, and I started spotting. After 10 days, I quit taking this medication. I have taken several types of birth control pills in the past and have never had side effects like I did while on this pill. The only reason I didn't rate it lower than a 2 is because it could have done its job and prevented pregnancy, but I didn't take it long enough to find out."

"I figured I'd share my experience since I've tried so many birth control pills, including this one. This was terrible! The side effects I had were extreme bloating and water retention. Anytime I'd eat, I felt like my stomach was so distended it would pop! In addition, it caused the worst constipation I've ever had for some reason. No mood changes or breakouts, but the feeling like a whale and serious constipation were not worth it! I moved to this pill from the lower dose Microgestin 1/20 because of spotting. No spotting with this pill, but I would take bleeding any day over the other effects! I'm trying Aviane next. I know everyone's body is different. I definitely don't recommend this pill."

"I originally started birth control around the age of 17-18. I had very heavy periods through high school and would miss a day of school every month due to the awful cramps/diarrhea I would get. I was put on a higher hormone pill that helped my periods lighten up but made me gain 10 pounds or so. Long story short, I got switched onto Microgestin and was happy on it for 5-6 years. I didn't have any problems with acne, weight gain, or heavy periods. I actually would only get a very light (just spotting pretty much) period once every 3 months or so, which my doctor said was normal with this birth control. I had no issues with pregnancy on the pill either, and my boyfriend and I do not use protection since I'm on the pill. I recommend it!"

"I'm 29, and I was originally on Gildess, and I loved it! Suddenly, my pharmacy gave me this new pill. Bleh. They told me it was exactly the same, but something wasn't right. For some reason, Microgestin gave me insane headaches. At first, I was like, okay. 1 or 2 headaches every other week is fine. But then it went to 3x a week, then 4x a week! Suddenly, I had a throbbing headache that was literally with me for 2 weeks! I thought maybe at first it was my ventriculoperitoneal (VP) brain shunt malfunctioning, but I got it checked, and it was fine! Then I did some research and found that this BC can cause crazy amounts of headaches. I am so, so done with this BC. It's now been 1.5 weeks since I've been off it, and guess what? No headache! Getting an IUD on my next cycle."

"I was prescribed this because I initially tried Velivet or Previfem, I can't remember. Whatever pill it was caused me unbearable side effects and immediate weight gain. Microgestin gave me nausea and headaches when I first started taking it, but it went away after the second month. It helped my back acne (which was really stubborn), but it didn't do much for my face acne. After taking it for about a year, I didn't see the best results. I have cystic acne, so I'm going to give Tri-Previfem a second shot. My period got lighter, and it helped with my cramps, but my goal is to improve my skin since it seems to be hormonal. Good luck with finding the pill that suits you best!"

"Was on this pill for three months. Just recently decided to switch. Start new BC today. Anyways, Microgestin Fe made me break out bad. My forehead and chin, that's why I decided to switch. I never really break out, and it bothered me so much. But other than that, the pill made my period very light and few to no cramps. It did its job and prevented pregnancy. Did cause some mood swings. Caught myself crying from time to time. And I feel like the pill made me gain a little weight."

"I was on this in the past for a year and had no problems with it. I stopped taking it for a year, then recently got back on the 1/20 to help with acne. In the 6 months that I took 1/20, I had my period every two weeks, with extreme mood swings around the time of my period. I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression since adolescence, and this does NOT help. No real weight gain. My acne didn’t change much, and I am using Epiduo as prescribed by my derm. Due to having two periods a month, I went back to my gyno, and she prescribed me the 1.5/30. I’ve been on it for 2.5 weeks, I have already had a period, and I have the worst breakout I’ve had since I was 15 (I’m 24). Shockingly, I haven’t had much issue with the mood swings, but I’ve been insatiably hungry. After reading others’ experiences with this pill, I’m throwing the rest of my pack away! The acne is not worth it."

"I decided to take birth control just in case I decided to become active in the future. I wanted to start taking the pill before the school year to see how it would impact me and to get adjusted. At first, my acne flared up more than usual. Once I got my period, I experienced horrid and uncomfortable cramps one of the first days, that I had to call out of work for being sick (I was crawling, crying, and threw up once). The period lasted about 2 weeks. I've had slightly bipolar moods before, but once taking this pill, the moods were extremely hot and cold. For two hours, I would be angry, and then I would experience happiness for a bit, just to go into another anger/sadness. Depression was worse with bad thoughts. I'm stopping the pill now."

"I have been taking this pill for many years and never had any problems: no headaches, no weight changes, good mood. I stopped taking it for pregnancy and breastfeeding, and when I came back to it, I started having very heavy periods, and missing just one pill caused me to have my period, even with taking pills after the missed one. If I wrote this before my pregnancy, I would have given it a 10."

"Out of all the pills I tried, this one was one of the worst ever! I was on this when I was younger. This pill always had me angry, I cried if anybody looked at me funny, and the last day of my period and the first day off it was awful. At least I can say I trusted my doctor and gave it a try. My sister and a couple of my friends tried this pill, and they said the same things. I will say it helped lighten my periods, no weight gain, and no babies. That was the only reason I gave it a 5 rating. It just wasn't the right combination of hormones as far as moods."

"I’ll give a little medical background first before I tell my experience. 28 years old. Fairly active. Was placed on the pill at 15 years old to control my PMDD and anxiety. I switched to this pill in January after thinking I needed a switch to control some anxiety. This pill has ruined my life. I thought it was stabilizing my mood, it actually increased my anxiety and made me have no emotion towards anything! After my 3-month trial, my pharmacy switched me to the generic form of this pill. This switch made me realize that my anxiety was out of control. I’d cry at the drop of a dime. Over nothing. Paranoid. Nervous. Awful. I was switched back to the Microgestin, and the anxiety persisted. Skipped 3 periods so far. Constant migraines. It’s been one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. Switching next month. Beware if you are prone to anxiety and depression. This pill amplified it."

"I have been on this birth control for over a year and have never experienced any symptoms or side effects. I started using this birth control because I was starting Accutane to cure hormonal acne that never went away after I got my IUD taken out. I have never used any other oral birth control pills, but I have used the Implanon and the Mirena, and the experience with the pills has been much better for me."

"I have had a great experience with Microgestin. After a year of taking the 1/30 Microgestin, I started regular breakthrough bleeding. My gyno increased it to the 1.5, and it works really well! My libido is about 50% less than what it was before, but I'm okay with that. Highly recommend."

"Pros: my period was always on time. Cons: abnormal Pap smear (abnormal epithelial cells). I was very worried because I didn’t know what was causing the abnormality. The tests showed negative HPV, in many cases, abnormal epithelial cells appear when HPV is positive. Anyway, I decided to stop the pills, and months later I went for a Pap smear again, and everything is ok."

"I have been on this birth control for 2 years now. I have not had any problems while on this birth control. I do feel that I have gained at least 20 pounds while on this birth control. It definitely helped with my heavy periods. I used to have to use/change my super plus tampons. I now experience lighter periods and less cramping. The only negative side effect I experience on my period are the headaches!! The headaches I get on the first and last day of my period are horrible. But other than those few negative effects, this birth control has really helped with my heavy periods. I would also say it has helped with my anxiety. I used to experience severe anxiety before starting birth control."

"I was put on this when I was 18. I had no negative experiences. Before, I had acne on my cheeks that killed my confidence. This birth control cleared it all up. It gave me perfect, glowing skin. My breasts were more full. My hair was long and luscious. I didn't notice any mood or sex drive changes. No weight gain. This pill made my periods so much better too. Lighter flow, shorter duration, and significantly reduced the severity and duration of cramps (from having terrible cramps most of my period to mild cramps the first day). Only issue I experienced was when I stopped it. After about three months off of the pill, my acne came back."

"This pill may work well for others but Microgestin Fe 1.5/30 caused me to gain 20 lbs. I have never weighed this much in my life, and I have been working out and avoiding fast food, yet the number on the scale climbs. I stopped the BC and took a different birth control, and boom lost 7 lbs."

"I’ve been on Microgestin Fe 1.5/30 for 10 years with zero issues, mental or physical. I have regular periods like clockwork, no issues with libido, mood swings, weight gain, or acne. Twice my birth control was switched to a different brand such as Junel or Yaz, and those were the opposite with horrible side effects. My doctor has made a note to not swap out Microgestin for another brand, which helps avoid any issues. It’s a great birth control, and I believe it’s also helped keep me safe from cervical cancer. My breasts have gotten a bit smaller, but that’s a small price to pay for the benefits of not getting pregnant and not having any serious medical issues."

"I switched to this from Sprintec because I wanted to be able to skip periods. It did work, although I had some light spotting, which is to be expected. I could only stay on it for a little over a month, though, because it affects my moods so badly and has not helped with acne like my previous prescription did. I have been getting so irrationally angry about stupid things and cry every day, so I am now switching because it's become too much. Besides that, I actually lost a few pounds on this medication and didn’t notice any effects on sex drive or lubrication."

"I've been on this pill for a few months and my complaints are the weight gain is out of this world. I feel as if it's making my metabolism go nuts. It's not too bad but not great either, I feel moodier and extremely self-conscious about almost everything now, and lastly the acne. My skin isn't horrible, but it never looked this bad before. I changed up my routine a bit, and I feel as if nothing is working or changing the state of my skin. Very annoying."

"I was put on this Microgestin Fe 1.5/30 because I have extremely bad menstrual cramps. It was effective at stopping the pain for the most part, but I had a lot of negative side effects. Horrible headaches, acne, fatigue, mood swings, depression, and dizziness are all things I started experiencing when starting this pill. These things are not things I experienced before starting this pill. I had light periods and the bleeding would stop for a week, but then I would spot from then until my next period came. Probably wouldn’t recommend this pill to anyone, but it works different for everyone."

"I have been on this pill for almost 5 months already. I am a 19-year-old, and I went on it because my periods were irregular (and I wanted to become active), but now after 5 months, it isn't worth it. I wasn't depressed before the pill, but now I am, and I have anxiety attacks at least once every week, and little fits of crying and terrible, horrible thoughts happen every now and then. Granted, for the first 3 months, I was taking it wrong. I had the 21-day supply, and after I finished the pack, I wouldn't wait the 7 days before I started the next one, and I would immediately start the next one. My acne has also never been this bad, I have constant breakouts in one area no matter how great I treat my skin."

"I'm taking this pill because I have very irregular periods, sometimes they can last up to two months. I'm currently going on one month of bleeding, and I started the pill three weeks ago. Bleeding may have gotten lighter, but it gets heavier throughout the day and hasn't even stopped yet."

"I started taking this medication 3 weeks ago. I've been struggling with terrible endometriosis pains for years, and I finally decided to do something about it. I take these pills continuously with zero breaks and zero placebos. I have had absolutely no spotting. I have slight cramps occasionally, but they fade quickly. I am slightly more hormonal, but it is barely noticeable. I have gained weight, however, I was on steroids for a week and a half as well, which could be the main contributor there. My skin is completely cleared up. I take this pill at the exact same time every single day."

"It was horrible. The headaches were never-ending and it made me so hungry! I've been off it for 2 months now. Just got the Liletta IUD put in last month, and it's seriously like night and day. I'm so happy I got off the pill. I'm not crazy hungry anymore, and my headaches are gone!"
