Ethinyl estradiol / norethindrone "I have been on Loestrin Fe 24 for 5 months now (give it a chance), and although it was more bearable to take 5 mg of Lexapro for the anxiety that came along with it (I would wake up at 3:30 a.m. each morning with anxiety for no reason at all), I now have noticed that I am experiencing more anxiety, as well as some weight gain and small breakouts. I went from a size 0 to a size 2, and now my size 2's are tight, especially in the buttocks region. Honestly, this pill is not that bad, but I would have to give Yaz a 10 as far as side effects--no weight gain, a clear complexion, and minimal anxiety. There is just one big negative about Yaz, it may cause blood clots, and that is pretty serious. I would recommend Loestrin 24 Fe for women over 40, though."

Ethinyl estradiol / norethindrone "If I could, I would give this pill a 0. My period continued to come a week early and heavy, cramping became worse than it has been. I gained 5 lbs, my acne got a lot worse, my lips got incredibly cracked, and my hypersensitivity worsened greatly. Definitely getting off of this pill as soon as possible."

"I am a week into my second pack, and yeah, I'll admit you feel some of the side effects, but none of mine have been as bad as these people are describing theirs. I've had a few headaches, breast tenderness, and I spotted once during the last pack. None are horrible and mimic very, very mild PMS. I started taking birth control to control my painful periods, and so far it's worked-- my last period was very light and painless. And I've also noticed the side effects have lessened the longer I am on the pill. The pill introduces new hormones in high doses to your body. You can't expect it to just adjust. It takes some time, but I believe the longer I'm on the pill, the less I'll feel the side effects. So far, it's doing the job I want it to do."

Ethinyl estradiol / norethindrone "I've been on about three different birth controls to regulate my heavy menstrual bleeding, the first one made me bleed the whole month. The second worked, but my doctor was worried that such a high dosage, especially at 15, wouldn't be good. The third I was on gave me my period every other week. Going onto Loestrin 24 Fe was really great, everything has gone well, and I've been on it for over 8 months now, and the only side effect I've had is the missed or light periods, they worry me. Other than that, I would totally recommend this pill."

Ethinyl estradiol / norethindrone "I have been on Lo Loestrin Fe for about 8 months. I was placed on Lo Loestrin due to excessive bleeding as a side effect of another medication. My cycles over the last 8 months have been on one month and off the next month, however, this month it all changed. The week my cycle should have come on, it failed to do so, and this would have been my on-again month. There is absolutely no chance that I am pregnant. I started my new pill pack, and my cycle decided to come on the same day. I am now into my second week of blue pills, and my cycle is still on. I can't take my other medication during this time because it causes excessive bleeding and clots. Don't know what to do next."

Ethinyl estradiol / norethindrone "This is my first month taking the pill. I have been off birth control for the past 9 years. I have been experiencing heavy bleeding, really bad cramps, and periods lasting more than 10 days. My doctor prescribed this. I take it at nighttime before I go to bed, and so far, no complaints. My period started last Thursday, and I started the pill on Sunday. On Tuesday, my period was gone. I will update you in a few months."

Ethinyl estradiol / norethindrone "I was initially given two Lo Loestrin Fe samples and had no issues until making the switch to Microgestin Fe 1/20 a few days ago. Due to breaking out in a rash (which zigzags across the top of my thigh) and nerve issues (numbness/pain/tingling that's made it difficult to walk), I had to stop taking the pill after 6 days of use. I'm relieved to know that it works for so many."

"The reason I stopped taking it was because I was going on 12 days with menstrual bleeding. After the first 24 hours I had been off the pill, I felt the jittery sensation take over my body. I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I was having suicidal thoughts and random thoughts that have never been inside my head. I thought I was being triggered by a past memory until I thought about the pill. I denied it at first and even went and talked to a therapist and told her I was having severe anxiety. My mom was getting so scared. I told her about the pill and we decided to look it up and came across this website. After reading these comments, I felt so much better because I wasn’t alone. What I’m experiencing right now is the most scariest thing EVER. My mind is still trying to get right and my body still feels jittery. I’m thinking it’s because of a withdrawal from the pill. But I wanted to come on here and share my experience as well. This pill is HORRIBLE!"

"Since I've been on Nortrel 1/35, I've been so sad, depressed, empty. I feel lost and useless and cry a lot. Family and friends have seen the change. I even began counseling because I couldn't figure out what was so wrong with me, but I knew I couldn't shake the feeling. My boyfriend took the time to quickly search effects after I told him how my mother thought my meds were negatively affecting me. Lo and behold, I'm not the only one! I'm so happy to know I wasn't losing it, and my life doesn't suck, the pills do. What worries me is I'm a healthy woman who is generally always happy, even in the face of issues, AND I HAD A MAJOR DECLINE in personality. What could possibly happen to a woman who already struggles with feelings of depression and anxiety? I was never screened psychologically prior to being prescribed, or afterward. Judging by the amount of similar experiences, doctors should ask basic questions prior to prescription. Do not take this medication unless it is absolutely your only option."

Ethinyl estradiol / norethindrone "My pharmacy ended up switching my birth control and gave me this one. First of all, I bled out for over a month on this birth control... not for me. I don't like getting my period a lot. I had severe cramps and was always tired. I don't recommend this birth control to anyone. Causes very abnormal bleeding."

"I started Nortrel 1/35 after I found I had 3 ovarian cysts on one ovary and a heavy, painful, irregular period. It has been a lifesaver for the period part. I have it when I want, which my doc says is every 81 days. The switch from the previous one to this was awful. I’ve been noticing a lower sex drive (the more I’ve thought about it), and I’ve also wondered if it’s contributing to my anxiety/depression. Seriously wondering about stopping for a while to see what happens."

"I just switched to this birth control. First day on, I see some good reviews and some horrible ones. I’m having abnormal bleeding, been on my menstrual period for 3 weeks heavily. I wasn’t on birth control previously but got one shot of Depo on July 29th, and my periods have been so depressing since. I just hope it helps get my period under control and get my hormones back on track. I do not recommend Depo, but I will give this a try."

"I was given Taytulla to reduce the heavy bleeding I experience as a result of uterine fibroids. I took it for almost 6 weeks, and it made me break out, gave me sore breasts, and my period came on worse than usual and, to date, has been on for three weeks and counting. I stopped taking it last week."

"I began taking Lo Loestrin Fe in March 2016 as a remedy for very heavy, frequently spaced periods. During the first two months, I had 4-5 breakthrough bleed days. The bleeding was more than spotting and more like a regular period. By the third month, I had no period and only a very small amount of breakthrough bleeding. I have no other side effects to report, and at this point, I am happy with the very light to non-existent periods and almost no breakthrough bleeding."

"The only reason why I got on the pill was because I was getting my period every two weeks, and I would spot like crazy! After my visit with my OBGYN, I started taking the pill. Now I only get my period for 3 days, and it's super light! The major downfall I had with it was the crazy mood swings! I would get mad at anything and everything, one minute I'd be happy, the next one I'd either be mad or sad. The pill did not cause me to gain weight, it actually helped with weight loss. I currently am off of it right now, and my mood swings are the same as if I had barely started taking the pill, and I haven't gained any weight either. Luckily, my skin did not flare up since I do have a problem with acne."

"After 15 years off birth control, my Dr. started me on Lo Loestrin Fe to regulate my shortening cycles and perimenopausal symptoms. I didn't have any problems with the pill when I took it years ago, so I really didn't expect this roller coaster. The first month, I had constant cramps, night sweats, and bloating, but my cycle did extend to 25 days and was significantly lighter. The second month, I had bleeding and spotting for 21 straight days. I was worried I had cancer. My doctor feels a pill with higher estrogen will do the trick. I'm ready to try anything but this another month. I realize everyone responds differently to every med. I'm only posting to help someone else who may be experiencing the side effects."

"Absolutely the worst medication I've ever taken! Was given for abnormal bleeding (after ruling out literally every other possible cause). After a few days, I was so exhausted I could barely function, I had extreme mood swings and could not stand to be around anybody. I was no longer interested in having any contact with my significant other (and haven't since). I didn't continue taking it for very long, maybe 10 days. I became so enraged over minimal things I figured it was a choice between taking the med and ending up in prison for murder or continue dealing with the bleeding that I've been dealing with for years."

"At age 51, I was given this pill to control the type of painful endometriosis I have been experiencing. My past experience trying birth control pills in my 20s and 30s was awful. I never finished a pack due to uncontrollable crying, depression, mood swings, weight gain, exhaustion, and bloating. I was told the lower hormone levels in this pill would give me fewer side effects. I will say I did not gain weight or feel bloated, but I experienced nausea and exhaustion to the point I was curled up on the couch every night. Then on only day 12, I woke up, and the crying began. I couldn't go to work, and then my heart was racing, I felt dizzy, and full of anxiety for no reason. I ended up in the ER. Anxiety and depression are listed on the label."

"For reducing bleed from fibroids: I read the reviews but had not used a birth control in over 20 years, so I didn't think much about the bad reviews. That has since changed because by the 4th pill, I felt horrible. On Friday morning, after starting the pill on the previous Sunday, I was so sick. I was nauseous, restless, foggy-minded, sad, and emotionless, and I wouldn't have thought it was the pill had I not read the side effects. I will refuse to endure 2-3 months of this. I have a career, a life, and a family, and I cannot be sidelined because of a horrible drug. My co-pay was still $43.00 even after my BC/BS paid $88.00, and I wish I had known how bad it was going to be because I could have saved money and days of being sick. Most medications do not present problems for me, which tells me this form of 'low dose' hormone is not for me. Reconsider this drug if your OB/GYN prescribes it. I'd actually rather have the laparoscopic hysterectomy and endure that than to be this sick for months."

Ethinyl estradiol / norethindrone "I had a decent experience with Balziva. It wasn't right for me, but everybody is different, so that doesn't mean it won't be great for someone else. Before birth control, my periods came every other week. With Balziva, they came about halfway through the pack and lasted until the end of the pack. This happened for the 3 months I was on it, so my doctor switched me to a different one. Other than the weird periods, I've had a positive experience with Balziva. I think my face did break out a little bit, but nothing serious. My breasts were also a little bit more sensitive, and I have gained a few pounds, but I'm not quite sure if it's due to the Balziva or me being away at college. But overall, good experience."

Ethinyl estradiol / norethindrone "My sister-in-law has been on this medicine for 3 months now, and the abnormal side effects have worsened. She had massive mood swings and very serious depression! Before this, she was a normal 13-year-old girl. She ended up in the hospital from panic attacks and violent behaviors twice now, with no doctors able to figure out why! My father-in-law brought up the point of the medicine, and now the doctors have taken her off it. If you have any of these types of symptoms and have never before had them, then maybe this is it!"

"I was put on a birth control for abnormal periods. I switched two months ago to Microgestin 1/20 since it’s cheaper than what I was previously on. In terms of contraception, it’s been perfect. It’s also regulated my periods, which my other pill was not able to do. HOWEVER, after reading a lot of reviews, I’m starting to put some pieces together. I had a horrible yeast infection that took forever to get rid of; a problem I’ve never had before. I also have realized my acne got worse lately. I started breaking out across my forehead, which is really abnormal for me. In terms of mood, it’s been really bad. Crying, lack of focus, depression, and anxiety. I’m making an appointment with my OB to go over some options."

"I am so surprised at the bad reviews this medication is getting. I first started taking birth control not because I was sexually active, but because I had terrible periods. Hemorrhaging to the point where no tampon could help me (something that runs in my female family). I started with Loestrin, and my life changed in a good way. My periods lightened up, and I got to the point where I only had to wear thin pantiliners to get through my cycle. For some reason, my doctor later switched me to Minastrin, and everything is still working as it was. Since starting birth control, I have gotten married, and it's now helping me with what it was made to do as well as beautifully managing my periods. Love it!"

"I started taking this because my periods were very heavy, and I had to miss up to 3 days of school a month because of terrible cramps. I only took the pill for 8 days - 8 days full of intense nausea, constipation, depression, and cramps. I've been off it for a week, and I am still recovering from the negative side effects."

"I am 18 years old and had severe bleeding ever since I first got my period. I started off with a normal flow that lasted one week, which eventually got heavy to the point where I wore purple maxi overnight pads during the day. My periods would last 7 months, and eventually, I became anemic. After visiting many doctors, which only suggested birth control (the option we tried to avoid), the gynecologist I visited prescribed Lo Loestrin Fe to stop my periods and some iron pills and vitamin D for my anemia. I didn't suffer from cramps, bloating, nausea, and such during my long periods. After starting Lo Loestrin Fe, it stopped completely, and I have had no bad experiences with acne or weight gain, just bleeding in my 3rd week. It's been a great two months!"
