"TLDR; months-long headaches/migraines on EluRyng. EluRyng, never again. NuvaRing and Prasco generic are the ONLY options I'll use now. NuvaRing and EluRyng are NOT comparable. EluRyng gave me a constant headache for 2.5 months, with intermittent migraines. I regularly don't get headaches often, so this constant headache has been highly unusual. I even had my eyes checked, and there's nothing out of the ordinary. Plus, my blood pressure was close to normal and deemed not the cause for headaches. Also, EluRyng is NOT comparable to the Prasco generic. I didn't notice a difference between the Prasco generic and NuvaRing, and I was on NuvaRing for around 18 years before switching (meaning the Prasco generic worked well for me). I was on the EluRyng for 12 days before I felt terrible and have ever since. For easy reference, Prasco has maroon on the packaging; EluRyng looks similar to the NuvaRing packaging in that it's also blue."

"This has been the worst experience. My insurance no longer covered NuvaRing, so I was switched over. I gave it a chance, and after 2 months, I had longer menstrual cycles, mood swings, and the worst for me, even though I'm physically active, I was gaining weight."

"It started out okay, but on the second ring, I was bleeding every day for a month and had the worst cramps. I decided to take it out once I felt a pinch in one of my ovaries - the pain was so bad I was hyperventilating. Once I did take the ring out, the pain started to subside almost immediately. Listen to the reviews of other women and don’t take this birth control."

"I’m surprised to see so many negative reviews on the EluRyng. I know everyone’s experience can be different. I was on the NuvaRing for about 7 months until my insurance switched me to the EluRyng. I’ve been on it for about a year. So far, I had a great experience with it. I didn’t notice any difference from the brand name to the generic, except that the EluRyng is squishier and more flexible. I didn’t get any weight gain or mood swings. No headaches or anxiety. It has cleared my skin and helps knowing when my periods will come. I have the app to remind me. Overall, I give it a 9. I have nothing negative to say about it, except that it’d be nice if it came with an applicator."

"I feel like the oddball out, but I LOVED EluRyng. I was on it for years until my prescription plan changed and my insurance will now ONLY cover NuvaRing... go figure. The first month has been awful - I haven't stopped bleeding, I've been bloated, anxious, and on the higher end of the 150s in terms of weight, where normally it's almost always 148 (no changes in diet). I want to go back!! I could never tell (side effect-wise) that it was there, so I really hope based on all of these opposite reviews it takes this month to adjust, and then I'm in the clear."

"Awful!! Terrible!! I used NuvaRing for an IVF cycle, and since it has gone generic, my insurance doesn’t cover it, so I tried the EluRyng for the latest cycle. I have been feeling very angry with crazy mood swings, depression, and anxiety. I had to take it out because my mental health is severely suffering. I’m also starting to get headaches. I tried to wait it out - after 2 months maybe things would level out, but it just got worse. Big pharma and insurance companies don’t care about women’s health, and unless you do your research and advocate for yourself, they’ll just roll right over you. Would rate 0 if I could. This medication is dangerous."

"Same story as most ladies - switched to this instead of NuvaRing. EluRyng made me anxious, depressed, unmotivated, cold, gave me ALL symptoms of Hashimoto's disease. Wrecked my cycle. Gained 17 pounds after two years on it despite working out 4+ times a week and eating well. Get off IMMEDIATELY. Find a fertility awareness method instead. The one I use (Sensiplan is 99.4% effective). Hormones aren't worth it."

"I was on NuvaRing several years ago before trying an IUD due to minimal side effects. I recently had my IUD removed and wanted to go back on NuvaRing but received EluRyng instead. I am experiencing awful side effects - mood swings, fatigue, nausea, weight gain, headaches. I don’t ever remember feeling this way on NuvaRing, but I will be going back on it."

"Reading through the reviews, I feel what I had been feeling is now validated. I had been on NuvaRing for 10+ years and received the generic one day and didn’t realize it wasn’t the same product. I feel like a monster came out. In 3 months, my period changed, my weight gain was noticeable, but by far the worst side effect was my anxiety, mood swings, and irritability. The change in me was drastic. When I realized it wasn’t NuvaRing, I called my insurance, and they said it wasn’t covered anymore. I paid $177 for NuvaRing just to see if it was me or the generic, and it all cleared up. The fogginess, irritability, and anxiety cleared up in 2 weeks. We opted to completely get off birth control after that. Can’t afford $177/month for NuvaRing even though my doctor said it was “medically necessary.” I have to meet an Rx deductible of $3000 first, so it’s not covered. This is a terrible, terrible generic and by no means should be forced on women."

"With EluRyng, I had the worst migraines, exhausted for no reason, but can't stay asleep the whole night, stomach and digestive issues, breakthrough bleeding, and sharp pains two weeks in, followed by overwhelming anxiety. I had to take it out. I’d rather get my period early. I will only go back on the ring if it’s an actual NuvaRing or authorized generic. Can’t get this garbage out of my body and system fast enough. NEVER AGAIN."

"I have been on this for 9 months. I had terrible anxiety. I thought it was me. I have horrible cramping ever since I started this. I have pain in my thighs, hips, and abdominal cavity. My breasts are sensitive. I am having spotting. I tried to take it as my doctor prescribed and had two months of bleeding, it was horrible. I went to the gynecologist behind it after going to the ER first. I have had more migraines than usual. My first time on the birth control, my face broke out in acne. I battle with my mental health, and this messed with me badly. This birth control sucks, and it causes me pain in my vagina, ovaries, and uterus. I miss my NuvaRing."

"EluRyng is possibly the worst birth control ever. If you have an option, do not choose this one. My doctor prescribed the name brand, but due to insurance, this terrible product was provided. I've opted to pay $250/month for the original brand because this birth control is that bad. I have a somewhat sensitive stomach as it is, but as soon as I started using EluRyng, my gut and stomach flared up so badly I went to see a gastroenterologist. After thousands of dollars of tests and doctor visits, I was told I might have IBS as there was nothing else wrong. After doing some of my own research and seeing others had similar bad reactions, I requested the name brand birth control. Within a day or two, my gut stopped hurting, and within two weeks, my stomach felt fine. I went through eight months of incredible pain and discomfort trying to figure out why all of the sudden I was having so many issues. Thank goodness for reviews on EluRyng. This product should not be allowed on the market."

"I've been on this birth control, going on 3 months. I've felt sick. Almost throw up. I have headaches and a lot of pain where I insert the ring. It's causing me to not get any sleep. Waiting to be put on the pill. I suffer from PCOS, and my bleeding hasn't stopped. This is day 4 of 3 months I've been on the ring. I'm so ready to take it out."

"I have been on NuvaRing for years... never had an issue, and my period was always controlled; my normal cycle was 3-4 days when taking out NuvaRing. In September 2020, I was switched to the generic, and it has been awful ever since! After reading these reviews, it validates why I’ve been either spotting or having a mild period sporadically or in between. The 3 weeks of having it in, it has made my sex drive low, and during sex, it is painful if you leave it in (NuvaRing was not like this). This generic is not a good substitute for the real thing, so I do not recommend, and seeing that others have had the same problems, I will be scheduling an appointment with my doctor to switch."

"Age: 24. Pros: Low maintenance, easy to manage, could not feel it was there when it was in, effective contraception, helped to regulate my cycle, which tends to be unpredictable. Cons: I saw a dramatic increase in blood pressure (120/80 is normal for me, after using the EluRyng for 6 months, my BP had increased to an average of 142/103), significant water retention around my menstrual cycle, worsening mood swings (I am normally pretty calm and collected, and everything has made me want to cry), more exhaustion with the start of my period. All of these symptoms were new since starting to use the EluRyng."

"Worst experience with a birth control I have had. I have tried multiple birth controls, and this was terrible. I strongly recommend you try anything and everything else before this generic. It caused constant fast heart rate, I could not sleep because of it. Melatonin and Benadryl couldn’t even knock me out. Angry mood constantly. So tense and stressed, it caused pain in my jaw. Exhausted feeling, but again I could not sleep."

"4 days in using EluRyng and I’ve already taken it out. So blue and feeling down, not my normal self, heart rate unusually fast when resting, and lost 4 lbs in 4 days. Crying multiple times a day and fighting with my boyfriend over dumb stuff. Not a fan."

"I was on EluRyng for 7 months, and I bled 14 to 20 days out of the month. It was absolutely miserable, as I constantly had to use a tampon or pad since it was enough blood to leak through pants but not like a full-blown period. It was usually accompanied by intense itching before the bleeding would start and cramping (usually not too intense but annoying). I was exhausted all the time for basically bleeding 2/3 of the month for 7 months, and found myself having frequent mood swings, including depression and anxiety the first few weeks. I will say that it was convenient to use, as it just remains in the vagina, and my skin and weight didn’t change. I didn’t get pregnant or have any scares, but take that with a grain of salt, as it’s hard to get pregnant when you’re bleeding nonstop. Not the birth control for me."

"Started on my NuvaRing February 27th, 2022, and it was great. Didn't feel a thing, no pain, no sensitivity, nothing. Just went and picked up my 5th ring on the 14th and thought the packaging looked a little different. I had ZERO issues with the NuvaRing, only getting it to stay upwards towards my pelvic wall. Finally got to work the next day and went to put the EluRyng in, and that's when I noticed that it was a different brand. Looked it up and found out it was the generic brand, often used more because it's cheaper. Ever since then, I have been severely itchy (scratched so hard and long that I made myself bleed 3 different nights since the 15th, 5 days), super sensitive, and my woman parts are literally SWOLLEN from being so irritated from the EluRyng. I've had a migraine since I put the stupid ring in. I don't know if it's different medications in it, although I just called my doctor and she said there's nothing different. I've been on 4 different meds since the 15th, 5 days."

"I thought I was alone in this switch from NuvaRing to EluRyng, but apparently I’m in good company, which is so unfortunate. I’ve had the worst headaches, extreme fatigue, and swelling/tenderness in my breasts. My first week, I developed terrible acne and dry skin, and I hardly break out. My libido has decreased significantly. I took out my ring after reading these reviews because I simply cannot stand the thought of another week on this birth control method."

"I have used Nuvaring for about 4 years and never had any issues. I got off birth control for about 2 years and wanted to do Nuvaring again, but my OBGYN prescribed EluRyng instead. It’s so bad, I had the worst side effects and was spotting for a month straight, so it also affected my sex drive. I only tried it for 2 months, and that was more than enough to never use it again. Beware, ladies, this is not the same formula as Nuvaring."

"I only had recently started the NuvaRing in late 2019 just before the switch to the generic when it was offered on the market. I found out about the change and took the generic anyway due to what insurance covers and state regulations (if I need a prescription DAW, I need it written as brand DAW per state law). That was back in 2020 when I switched to the generic. I have been on the same generic ever since (this one EluRyng). Just recently, about 2 months ago, I started having severe side effects from my ring. I started cramping, getting back pain, horrible vaginal irritation, and a burning sensation in and outside. My doctor prescribed me some creams, and I thought that it had fixed it. Now, 2 months later, I am having the same problem and am in so much pain all over again. I can’t wait to finish up this month and take it out to see what happens. I am not sure why out of the blue I am feeling this way because I have done everything the same since I started using the ring. Why now?"

"In my normal life, I had some anxiety issues and occasional migraines. Then, I switched from NuvaRing to EluRyng about four years ago. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the cause until just recently because so many of the symptoms seemed related to things I had already experienced. Some totally new things, though, include grand mal seizures (I had never had one before), constant headaches (as in, every single day), a crazy rash that takes over my entire face and lasts for up to 6 months (I ate an extremely restricted diet for 2 months thinking it was candida), passing out at work and waking up in the hospital, flashing lights, intense auras, etc. that have been diagnosed as ocular migraines, vertigo, fatigue, countless other symptoms I probably haven't even considered being connected yet. I remember my life feeling really different, but I just assumed this is what your 30s feel like."

"I was previously on NuvaRing with no issues. I was switched to EluRyng and used it for 1.5 months. Those 1.5 months were absolutely horrible. Within days of switching to EluRyng, I noticed major changes to my mental health. I have never felt so emotionally unstable in my life. I was experiencing constant and intense mood swings, increased anxiety, and depression. Emotional regulation became incredibly difficult. I also noticed my ADHD symptoms were exacerbated too, despite staying on the same dosage of medication (Vyvanse). Some other side effects I had were headaches, nausea, random hot flashes, and cramps. This birth control is awful. The good news is you can go back to being on NuvaRing! Tell your doctor your symptoms and request that they file with insurance to be prescribed NuvaRing again. I have Medicaid, and it took my doctor advocating for me and sharing my symptoms, but I am back on NuvaRing, and it is covered by my insurance again!"

"As most everyone else, I had been on NuvaRing for 5 years with absolutely no issues, switched to the EluRyng due to insurance no longer covering the brand name. When I first started, I immediately got really bad cramps! I started to get kind of moody and was experiencing severe anxiety, my neck and back hurt significantly. In December, I was having anxiety attacks, migraines, felt shaky, vertigo, and sleeping all day. I saw my doctor in December, forgot about the med change, and said depression and anxiety could be because of the pandemic. I started having panic attacks, and anxiety and depression continued. I couldn't wear my eyeglasses and had bad tension headaches. At the end of March, I looked up medication and read reviews of others, immediately contacted my gyno. I’ve only been back on the NuvaRing one cycle, but overall I feel better, still adjusting. I wonder how long before they pull it off the market because no one should have to go through these side effects."
