"I am 30, UK size 12/14, and have PCOS. To control my hormone imbalance, extreme bloating, and period pain, which at times would make me faint, I've been prescribed Yasmin. I took it for over 3 months, and for some time it was a relief because I could live a life of a normal person. The bloating was less, my hair wouldn't fall out as much, but most importantly, the painkillers I took to control the period pain would actually work. HOWEVER, what happened later was a lot scarier!!! I had 3 hemiplegic migraine attacks with stroke-like symptoms!!! The last one caused face numbness, followed by mind confusion and body being paralyzed for 3 hours. In the hospital, they’ve told me that what I had wasn’t a stroke but a severe form of hemiplegic migraine (the headache kicks in later), caused by Yasmin!!! I've stopped taking Yasmin, and I’ve never had an attack since. So think twice!!! Dealing with a problem by taking Yasmin might open doors to new problems!!!"

"I have PCOS and struggle with mood swings, hair loss, and pretty severe hirsutism. I have had a lot of success with Yasmin for all of the above. The most notable and stable difference comes after the 6-month mark. My body and facial hair grow back thinner and at a much slower pace, my mood is very stable, and I don't lose anywhere near the same amount of hair from my scalp. I also have easy and comfortable periods, and my appetite is very stable on Yasmin, which I can't say about other pills. I haven't put on any weight as a result. The first 2 weeks of being on Yasmin can be difficult (nausea, headaches), and I don't recommend it for very sedentary/very unfit ladies, as the risk of clotting is slightly higher because of its Drospirenone content."

"Yasmin kept my skin clear and my period 'normal' for years. As soon as I stopped it, life became disastrous again. My face was oily and broke out. I had coarse facial chin hair growing constantly. Periods were heavy with cramps I had to take 800 mg ibuprofen for. I started taking them again after 6 months off. Upon resuming, in the first month I had no significant change in acne or facial hair. The second month, slight breast tenderness, and my face was less oily. Breakouts are less but not gone yet. There is less facial hair. Into month 3, breast tenderness is gone and improvements in skin and hair continue. This pill is great for women with PCOS like myself. I should have never stopped using it in the first place."

"26 (female). Was so scared to take this because of what I heard about blood clots and depression. I have taken it for 6 months now. The first week felt a little weird, then nothing, no side effects at all, nothing. Benefits: I have regular lighter periods with no cramps. No acne anymore. My body hasn't changed physically. It doesn't even feel like I'm taking medicine. And I'm not pregnant, so it works. It did affect my libido though, I'm never in the mood anymore, big change. Well, I guess that prevents babies too."

"I didn't think there was a problem, no immediate reactions, 2 years, and I'd put on 15 lb without changing my lifestyle. My (mild) acne seemed to improve, and it was great being in control of my periods. Then I became moody, emotional, combative, and depressed. Really depressed. I had migraines, at least 3 attacks a month, I had hypertension. And because I had put on so much weight, I was trying to lose it, playing football 3 times a week and going to the gym 2 times a week, no big difference, and I ate less than my slim friends. I don't smoke. I had hypertension (185/135 being the highest reading). I stopped taking it, and now I feel better, lost 10kg, happier, blood pressure is normal. Now I have polycystic ovaries, I blame that pill."

"I was given Yasmin by my pharmacist because the pill I usually take was out of stock. The three weeks I was on it, I became incredibly depressed. I already have a history of mental illness and depression, but before recently had been doing well. Taking Yasmin affected my mental health incredibly. By the third week, my anxiety was at an all-time high, I was suffering horrible mood swings, I was crying on and off daily, and I was beginning to suffer suicidal thoughts. I stopped taking the pill a couple of days ago and already feel an improvement. I am never taking this again. The last three weeks have been awful. I am also disappointed in my pharmacist for not warning against this and just providing it as an alternative to the pill I was previously taking, which never resulted in these side effects. If you have a history of depression or mental illness, DO NOT TAKE THIS!!!!"

"I have been on this birth control for about three months. Although my periods are shorter, I have had really bad side effects. It has made me very moody, I have had really bad headaches, and I have experienced major hair loss. It freaked me out, and I switched back to my prior birth control."

"I have been on Yasmin for 11 and a half years. At first, I didn't have any problems. But over the last few years, I have noticed terrible things happening each month. First, it was spotting, breast tenderness, mood swings, sadness, headaches, irritability, you know, the small little things. But more severely, I have heart palpitations, dizziness, and now high blood pressure."

"I was only on Yasmin for 2 months, prescribed by my doctor to help with my PMDD symptoms. By month one, I wanted to throw in the towel. I felt gross, bloated, sore, big, achy breasts, and my mental health began to put me at risk. I had incredible thoughts of low self-worth, insecurity, and it affected the whole household. It did clean up my skin, though, but I never had long, painful, heavy periods to begin with, so I’m jumping off Yasmin and birth control and will seek another avenue like SSRI medication. I read many other negative reviews, and I related to them all. I felt like a different person, crying all the time, appetite changes, and started avoiding my usual loved activities. Stay strong, girls. Give it a go as everyone is different, but know your body too."

"I do believe everybody experiences different symptoms. It's my third box of Yasmin, and I'm probably gonna give it one or two more shots, but I'm thinking of quitting it. The first box of my pills was a 21-day long nightmare. I had breakthrough bleeding the whole month, I wasn't even sure when my period started. I had huge intestinal problems. Went for two abdominal ultrasounds because of constant bloating, overly active guts, and diarrhea/constipation (it switched every 2 or 3 days). My breasts, dear Lord, I never felt so tender in my entire life. Luckily, as the next box came, bleeding stopped, so did tenderness. I still do feel bloated and gassy, but it's a lot better. Gonna give it one more shot, but I just don't feel it's suiting me."

"Out of all the birth control pills, this one is best! Gained some weight in the 'right' spots :) Less PMS, if any at all, lighter periods/flow. And this pill is safe enough to take for 3 consecutive months, so you can have your period only 4 times a year!!! That's so AWESOME!"

"I’ve been on Yasmin for 2 years now and never had any problems with it. 10/10 effective for birth control for me, but then again I’m very conscious of taking mine at the same time every day. Although in the past 6 months, I get really bad mood swings, and that’s the only thing I could fault it on."

"The Yasmin pill has KILLED people, and it is known to give blood clots. I wish I never put this in my body. It completely changed who I was as a person. I am starting to get myself back to normal again. The only thing it did for me was give me really clear skin. Now that I have stopped taking it, I have started to break out, but I will take pimples over putting this pill back into my body. Please be careful with Yasmin. I’m warning you from one female to another... do your research and look out for yourself. It mucked up my life."

"Amazing pill. I took Yasmin for 5 years with no side effects except low libido, which is why I eventually switched pills. Overall, light, short, cramp-free periods. Worked great for me, no PMS at all. And the best part is I never got pregnant, very good. When I wanted to get pregnant, I was only off Yasmin for 1 month before conceiving my son. All in all, it was a great pill."

"I was on Yasmin for about two weeks, and it has caused me so much bad. I started experiencing severe anxiety, panic attacks, lightheadedness, and even problems with my vision. I’ve been off for about a week now, and things are slowly, very slowly leveling out. My eyes are still a bit messed up, and my panic attacks happen probably every other day or so, along with the dizziness. At first, doctors had no idea what was going on with me, which led me to a hospital visit because the panic attacks were so severe, as well as three appointments with my family doctor in just a week! And a CT scan to make sure I didn’t develop a blood clot in my brain from the pill! Unfortunately, I experienced some of the worst side effects of this drug! I’m extremely scared to even consider taking any form of birth control again! Please, if you care for health, don’t take this pill!"

"I have tried many contraception (pills and implants) but was happy with Yasmin. Boobs grew and I felt good while taking the pill. I did have increased anxiety and depression on the 7-day break due to hormones, but I enjoyed taking this. I've had to stop due to migraines and migraines with aura."

"I’ve been using Yasmin for over a year now, and it’s cleared my skin and lightened my heavy periods, as that was the reason I had to go on it. But I cannot stop crying?!? Like I never would’ve been like that before, and now I never want to go anywhere or go out. I feel like I’ve pushed all my friends away. I just feel irritated that I’m so emotional and that I can’t do anything to help the situation, it’s so frustrating. Honestly, it’s a hit or miss for everyone, but there are more good days than bad days, which is a plus. I just feel a bit depressed and stressed out about every small thing and get worked up over nothing. But I don’t think I’d be able to stop taking it because it has done what it was supposed to as my periods have decreased a lot in cramps and duration. It would last a week, but with the pill, it lasts 4 days at the most!"

"Only positive is my boobs looked amazing. I turned into a short-fused, depressed cow. Usually such a happy, placid, and understanding person. Was such a shock for my partner and caused massive arguments. I experienced brain fog, severe depressive moods, severe anxiety, and my pimples didn't budge. In the end, my relationship meant too much to me to stick it out on Yasmin. My sister also had the same experience."

"I have been using Yasmin now for about 6 months and absolutely love it. It has cleared my skin so much, giving me much more confidence. I don’t experience any headaches, mood swings, or anything bad at all really. Also, my boobs have gotten bigger since taking it, which is a bonus. I know it’s a 21-day pill and you are meant to have a period on it, however, as I have quite heavy periods, I asked the doctor if I could just take it back to back without having a break for a period. I was told this was fine by 2 doctors and that it would not affect me whatsoever in the future of family planning!"

"I have been on Yasmin since I was 15. My periods used to last 9-11 days, were heavy, and very painful. I can remember my mom keeping me out of school due to this. Not only was my cycle completely crazy, I had acne on my shoulders, upper back, and upper arms. Being in high school, something like this can be traumatizing. Anyway, after almost 6 years, I have been acne-free (maybe the occasional bump or 2) and 4-5 day easy periods! I did gain weight... but who knows if it was because of the birth control... like the lady said before, she gained in all the 'right' places so I can't complain about that one. I went up a whole size! I plan on taking this until I decide to make a little one (another 4 years hopefully)."

"At first on Yasmin, I didn’t notice anything different with my moods, as I had been on a different pill before Yasmin for 4 months. But then I started to become more aware that I was having no energy to do anything. Anytime I got my period, I would get extreme cramps, which I never did before. I was just feeling so sad because of this pill. I’ve cried an abnormal amount of times, definitely not usual for me. My mood swings are atrocious as well, and since I’ve a boyfriend at the moment, I’m crying and getting annoyed over the smallest things. Long story short, AVOID this pill. The only good it did was not make me put on weight and make my skin clear."

"I have been on a number of pills in the past (aged 28, started 18) - I have been diagnosed with endometriosis, so my reasoning for remaining on some sort of hormonal BC was vital to reduce the symptoms. I was placed on Yasmin after experiencing major mood swings/depression on Yaz. Yasmin seemed to reduce these mood swings considerably. Since Yasmin, my periods, although regular, have been light and cramping has been reduced/completely absent. Amazing! (5 years on it now). I have been getting migraines for the last 2 years, so I might have to change my BC again. One's body changes with age, I guess our meds need to, too."

"I was prescribed this pill when mine was unavailable and spent the few months I was on it completely depressed. I’d never suffered from mental health issues previously, but while on Yasmin I was consistently low and cried almost every day. I came off the pill and felt myself returning to my normal self in a few days. This pill ruined me for months."

"Please! If you are taking Yasmin/Yaz, stop immediately. Eight years ago, at 37, I had a blood clot in my leg (DVT) that moved into both sides of my lungs (PE). I was completely healthy! I had two filters and a stent inserted. When I went into the hospital, the doctors and nurses told me they see way too many young women die or almost die from blood clots from Yasmin. Please research it! I now, eight years later, have to go back in to get my last filter removed, so please just switch to another brand of birth control. It could seriously save your life!"

"So, overall, Yasmin has been pretty good! I was pretty put off by all of the reviews, but I decided to give it a go because everybody is different! Let's start with the positives- I feel less stressed about pregnancy (I still use condoms just in case, though), my acne has stayed the same as it was when I took pills just for acne-providing I have a good routine. Negatives- I had quite a lot of nausea which comes and goes but overall is manageable but can make me quite tired! I had a lot of spotting and bleeding, but I didn't find it much of an issue apart from the fact that I have to wear pads all the time. Sometimes I was a bit achy-especially my boobs, but they definitely got larger! Before taking Yasmin, I had been diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and my biggest concern about taking Yasmin was that I'd heard it makes your mental health worse, but for me, it has stayed the same with sometimes feeling a bit more emotional over small things, but it's manageable!"
