Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Deep Vein Thrombosis, Prophylaxis "This drug had an very unpleasant side effect noticeable four days after my operation for a total hip replacement. First I had burning in the esophagus and stomach, followed by soreness around my mouth and lips, then burning spread to my back from my stomach. Six days after the operation, I went out to eat, put an olive into my mouth - the experience was like throwing a match into a lighted fire. Literally, my esophagus felt like it was on fire. Doctor recommended taking Omeprazole. Four days later, it was making no difference, I was being kept awake half the night with the burning. I told my doctor I must stop Pradaxa (Dabagitran) - she prescribed Apixaban instead. Burning reduced 1 day later, still sore inside, hope nothing lasting"

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I have been taking Pradaxa for 5 weeks and the only thing that has occurred to me is dark reddish urine every now and then and I don't bleed as bad as I have on Plavix and aspirin. I have noticed more gas but no heartburn, I hope this works as in May of this year I almost died because of atrial fibrillation, which threw a blood clot in my small intestines and I got gangrene and they had to remove 80% of my small intestines. So far Pradaxa is working fine with me. "

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "My mother has taken Pradaxa for almost 2 months, she was taking 150 twice a day. However became anemic, they changed it to 75 per day. She now gets 2 units of blood every 2 weeks as we cannot figure out why her hemoglobin is so low."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "Age 53. I have been taking Pradaxa 150mg twice a day for the last 3 months after first A-fib episode. Did not have another episode since. Side effects are mostly gas and upset stomach which got much less with time and the usual tricks (taking it with food and plenty of water). Otherwise, no other problems especially no bleeding (till now lol). I feel safer on it, knowing there is an antidote, than on Xarelto or Eliquis since where I live, hospitals do not keep antidotes for those as they are too expensive and have a low shelf life. I am also diabetic T2 and did not notice any sort of excess bleeding while measuring my BG. It took me a while to get used to the idea of taking an anticoagulant every day. However, knowing the possible consequences if not (possible stroke), I came to the conclusion to accept the bleeding risk, since I also have BP. Finally, Pradaxa doesn't prevent me from daily exercise; I try to walk 30-35 min every other day on my treadmill. Stay well and positive!"

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "For my first 2 - 3 days on Pradaxa, my stomach gurgled. Fortunately, I have had absolutely no other side effects during my 18 months of use. After 7 years on Coumadin, the monthly blood tests and diet control were a bit of a pain especially when traveling for extended periods."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "After many years on warfarin I switched to Pradaxa for its easier use and advertised effectiveness for prevention of blood clots and stroke given my history of blood clots and chronic atrial fibrillation. Returning from a 16 hour fight, after 3 days, I had two DVT’s in my leg and a large pulmonary embolism in both sides of my lungs. Timely application of heparin saved my life. Now back to warfarin!!. Thank you Pradaxa for never responding to me or my doctor for this almost fatal effect of your medicine!!"

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Deep Vein Thrombosis "I have taken Pradaxa for 6 months and have started having severe back pain in the lower back and also in the hipbones. Stopped taking it AMA and the pain lessened significantly. Another ultrasound showed that the clot has moved from calf to thigh so although my leg feels 90% better, the clot is still present and on the move."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "A bit to early for full review. I started Nov 14. Doctor said take with meals, and I've had none of stomach issues, except for gas. Have noticed loose bowels, and they may also be a side effect. I would rather not take this, but I understand from others that's it much better than warfarin. But it's very expensive. For me, its $230 monthly and insurance doesn't cover. Wish we could get price reduced."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I've been on Pradaxa now for about 2 months and love the convenience of not going for blood work almost every week. Being able to eat anything is great too! The only problem I've experienced is excessive gas....never had that problem before and now it's constant. Keep hoping that the gas will diminish soon, can be embarrassing. Some slight difference in bleeding when scratched."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Deep Vein Thrombosis "After travel by car, I felt the DVT symptoms, having had a previous occurrence 4 years ago. Pradaxa was offered as a choice, so that I would not have to return for the frequent pro-time tests. It has worked fine for a while, had reflux before and after starting to take. Upside, the leg with the clot feels better and is not as swollen, and I am not having the irregular heart beat with dizziness. Fewer headaches. Downside: my bones ache. My hips and my thumb hurt. Even my teeth and jaw are starting to ache. Since there are no other meds except long term thyroid replacements, I feel this is the cause. Feel swollen around my abdomen. And Acetaminophen doesn't work well for low back and other pains."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I had been taking Pradaxa for 3 weeks when one morning I went to get out of bed and had such severe pain in my knees that I almost fell down. With help I got to the bathroom. I had a scan to be sure I had blood flow, which I did. I had a blood test to see if my potassium level was okay and it was fine. At that point I got off Pradaxa and went to warfarin. I'll just put up with the blood tests and bruising for the next 2 months. Hopefully I will be off the warfarin then."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "Have been on Pradaxa for 7 months, like it a lot better then Coumadin. Taking it because of going into atrial fibrillation after lung surgery 2 years ago. I was put on Coumadin and told not to eat leafy greens. When you have had lung cancer you're supposed to eat leafy greens. They couldn't control the highs and lows I had with Coumadin. My only side effect is a burning feeling in my left knee to my foot but not sure it is related and am having tests done next month for circulation."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I was diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder 10 years ago after a blood clot took 3 ft of my small intestine. I've been on Coumadin ever since until about a month ago when my doctor suggested Pradaxa. Overall it's been a good change, decreased bruising and no blood tests, and increased amount of greens in my diet. The down side is trying to remember to take it twice a day with food. I have noticed a slight change in my weight...it's gone up. I don't know if it's from the Pradaxa or not. Last night I took it after a small snack and suffered almost immediate heartburn/acid reflux. I'm still suffering this morning....hopefully it will pass soon."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I have been taking Pradaxa for about three months and apart from the occasional heartburn, usually quite mild, I have had no real side effects other than a little more gas, but have felt much better in general and really appreciate the ability to eat green vegetables and not have the blood tests required by Warfarin. I have not had any bleeding problems and scratches seem to stop bleeding much more quickly than when using warfarin and no bruising. I shall continue to use Pradaxa as long as my doctor is happy with the treatment."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I've been taking 150mg x 2 per day for 5 weeks. I started it prior to a right side A-flutter ablation, and then a month later, a left side A-fibrillation ablation. I was on Coumadin for about two years while we got to the root cause of my cardiac issues, and I DO NOT miss bi-weekly sticks etc. when adjusting medicines up or down depending on INR results. The only downside for me is the slight nausea and daily loose bowel movements. I do a bit of traveling for work, and it can make the flying portion of travel rather nerve wrecking."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Pulmonary Embolism "I am 38 and have been on Pradaxa for about 15 months now, after having an unprovoked pulmonary embolism at 37. I was originally on Apixaban for about 3 months, but couldn't tolerate it. Pradaxa gives me the ability to function day-to-day, and I am truly grateful for this medication. I don't know how effective it is compared to other anticoagulants, but I can say I have not had any new blood clots while on it (knock on wood), and I have had over half a dozen CT scans and ultrasounds in the past year. So, it certainly is no slouch. As for side effects, I personally don't notice any, at least none compared to when I was on Apixaban. As a side note, because I am a veteran the VA takes care of my prescriptions, but I know that my new Medicare Advantage (United Healthcare PPO) plan covers it too."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I have a leaky valve causing irregular heartbeat and have been taking Pradaxa for around 15 years allowing me to maintain a very active life without ever worrying about having a stroke due to blood clots. As I have a delicate stomach my doctor prescribed a nightly stomach protector pill.. Before taking my twice daily I I eat part of my breakfast and dinner."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I have been taking Pradaxa (150mg twice a day) for about 2.5 yrs for AF had only had it once (AF) never to return, but still on it. I have never had any complications with this medication , I see a few of you have acid reflux, I take mine on an empty stomach no problems at all, plus here in NZ it is fully funded also…. I see a few comments where you guys have to pay for it which is bad luck for ya all.So in a nut shell some of us are lucky with no side effects….and some just bad luck, hope you all enjoying life anyways."

However...do bruise easy. Hands always getting nicked or arms..Have to be careful or wear gloves for protection when doing any yard work or dishes."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Pulmonary Embolism "Been taking Pradaxa for over a year I was on Eliquis but side effects says it causes COPD so told my doctor to take me off of it. So my journey goes on with Pradaxa but I read it causes bronchospasm? Wondering if same as COPD but worded different. Also my body overheats at night time making it difficult to cool down. Does anyone else experience same? It is miserable but need blood thinners."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "After taking Pradaxa for 18 months following a stroke due to undiagnosed afib I had a 2nd stroke. I was absolutely devastated as I had been told that the Pradaxa would protect me. I was fully compliant with taking it and had experienced no side effects. Thankfully I have recovered from the stroke but I still have paroxysmal afib which terrifies me as my drs refuse to switch me to warfarin due to the higher risk of bleeding. No-one can give me an answer as to why it failed and given that there is no way of checking whether it is working or not, unlike warfarin, i fear that this class of drugs is not working for me but there seems little alternative."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) "I had ablation surgery three weeks ago and have been on Pradaxa 150mg twice a day ever since. During the first week, I had a constant sour stomach and my surgeon suggested Prilosec. It takes a few days before Prilosec kicks in so I took Mylanta until it did. My second and third weeks were much easier but now that I'm starting my fourth week, the constant sour stomach is back. I still take Mylanta between meals but it only helps a little. I take Pradaxa during meals with a full glass of water. I have to stay on this medicine five more weeks. Any suggestions would be appreciated."

Pradaxa (dabigatran) for Deep Vein Thrombosis "I take Pradaxa for a blood clotting disease I’ve had for years. It does prevent clots as long as I stay on it, (2 -150 mg/day). However, I’ve had a plethora of negative symptoms from Pradaxa. Acid reflux, severe heart burn unless taken with food or a glass of milk. Feels like someone lit a torch in my throat. Severe hair loss, regardless of what scientific tests may say otherwise. Texture of hair is brittle on Pradaxa versus when I’ve gone off of it. Those who’ve commented on difficulties opening the bottle are correct. Very difficult to open, especially the first couple times on a new bottle. Joints ache, hip and back pain much worse when on this medication. I can’t take any anti-inflammatories while on Pradaxa for the severe hip and back pain, and as others here have mentioned, Tylenol doesn’t phase this pain. Bloating, and now gastrointestinal issues. Have never been constipated but I am now and yesterday began bleeding rectally. Scary!"
