"I have been taking this for around three years now, and I found that for the first year I was headache-free. On my second year, I was occasionally getting headaches like 2 or 3 a month. Then, after my third year of being on the medicine, it seemed as though I was taking nothing to help with migraines. I have now been getting up to 10 migraines at different times per day. I went to see my neurologist, and he said I'm having uncontrolled migraines, and he put me on Topamax, so I guess I will see how that goes."

Cyproheptadine "Cautiously wanted to try at a low dose first. However, the first time I needed it, I happened to be at a migraine treatment center (at a hospital). We agreed this was the safest circumstances to try something new. Within a half-hour, I pressed the nurse call button: had trouble keeping my eyes open! Minutes later: unintended sleep. Dosage too high and/or interaction with recent dose of Toradol? (Toradol makes me sleep a few hours later - which is why I was at the hospital.) Have not yet tried it again. Would try 1/4 of the dose next time - and not near the time frame of Toradol - and not when alone. No other side effects. No way to judge effectiveness. Primary goal of the first trial is 'can I tolerate this?' The second trial is to find out if the dose is enough for effectiveness."

"When I was in 3rd grade, I was diagnosed with migraines. Sometimes the medicine doesn't help. I feel lightheaded a lot, dizzy, and tired when I am in school. When I get them, my teachers just deal with it, or say, 'No, you don't have a headache. Go sit down,' or even they say, 'You are just trying to avoid doing your stuff,' which I'm not."

"My daughter, age 9, was having 3 to 4 migraines a week for over a year, so her neurologist put her on this medication. It has helped tremendously! She has maybe 1 or 2 a month now. We are now weaning her off of it, hoping her migraines don't come back full swing. She does seem to be more tired since she started taking it, but it did not interfere with her daily life. Her appetite did increase, but this wasn't an issue for her because she struggles to gain weight. She has gained about 5 pounds in the 6 months she's been taking it."

"This medicine has eliminated my 11-year-old's daily headaches. Also, this medicine has increased her appetite slightly. Before beginning this medicine, she was below the second percentile for weight. Now she is slowly gaining-somewhere between the fifth and tenth percentile. A great side effect for us!"

"I was prescribed this medication along with nortriptyline after a mild brain injury. It worked for the headaches, but caused dry mouth and weight gain. My doc thinks it's worse due to the med combo. I really want to go off the medication!"

"Calmed my migraines down to about one to two every two weeks, but have only taken it for 3 weeks and already have gained 9 pounds. I struggle with PCOS and weight loss already. If you struggle with weight loss, consider taking a different medication."

"Was prescribed this medicine because it's supposed to be safe in pregnancy. At first, it dulled the pain of my intractable migraine to a 2-3. It caused extreme sleepiness, and then it stopped working after about 5 days. Disappointing."

Cyproheptadine "Periactin helps control my migraines, which are almost daily. I would probably do better if I were able to remember to take it four times a day instead of morning and evening."

Cyproheptadine "I have been using Periactin, 8 mg twice daily, for well over 20 years, and... I have not had a single migraine since I started this as a blockade. Prior to this, I experienced several bouts of blinding migraines monthly for as long as I am able to remember: vomiting, visual aberrations, and indescribable pain. It used to be available as a PMBS script, however, thanks to the pressures of 'socialized medicine,' all antihistamines were removed, and thus I get to pay full tote odds, which adds a crippling extra to my expenses, however... better this than migraines. I cannot speak highly enough of the medication. Without it, I would have a very miserable existence."
