For Depression "I was on citalopram for two days. I started experiencing suicidal thoughts, trembling, insomnia, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and night sweats. I was immediately taken off of this antidepressant. What works for some may not work for others."

For Panic Disorder "I have always felt 'normal' up until the last 6 months, so when I developed social anxiety, panic disorder, and agoraphobia, I tried everything to overcome it - yoga, talking therapy, exercise, etc. Nothing was working and my panic was getting severe, so I very reluctantly tried Citalopram. The first couple of weeks were crap. Side effects included depression, increased anxiety, waking up feeling wired, needing the toilet as soon as I woke, sweaty feet, panic attacks at night, and a huge loss in appetite and energy. After day 4, I nearly gave up, BUT I AM SO GLAD I STUCK IT OUT! No more derealization almost immediately after starting Citalopram. After 3 to 4 weeks, I was feeling almost like my old self - and 6 weeks in, I actually can't believe the change. I still experience anxiety, but it feels much more manageable, and I am no longer having multiple panic attacks or bouts of anxiety a day. In conjunction with CBT, Citalopram has been life-changing. Please stick it out for at least a month!"

For Depression "Started taking citalopram 20 mg two months ago, good thing is no side effects, just a little loss of appetite, but also it's not effective, did not do anything for my low mood or anxiety. Guess it doesn't work for everyone, but I think it's a very safe drug."

For Panic Disorder "I was originally prescribed citalopram 7 years ago, diagnosed with major depressive disorder, and it had very little effect. It was later discovered I had bipolar disorder; I was prescribed citalopram a few times, and it never did much. A month ago, I was again put on 20 mg citalopram, but this time for panic disorder. We noticed a change almost instantly; I haven't had a day of panic since I started this medication, and my overall anxiety is much lower too. I had a few side effects (some nausea, loss of appetite, sleep disruption), which I'd never experienced with this drug before, but most of these faded in week two. We have noticed my dissociation is much worse than usual - normally happens 2-4 times a week, is now happening daily."

For Anxiety and Stress "This medication, citalopram, did not seem to help my anxiety at all, but instead trigger it. I was fine for the first few weeks, still adjusting and just going through the normal side effects that come along with almost any SSRI. After about a month, I started to notice I was losing more of the little appetite I had. I usually would only have about one panic attack a week on Prozac, but with citalopram, I have at least five."

For Depression "I have been on citalopram 20 mg for exactly two weeks now. Side effects I have been experiencing are nausea, nausea when yawning, constant yawning, appetite decrease (down 13 pounds), fatigue, flat affect (numb personality, expressionless face), and intense, deep negativity. I am taking citalopram for severe anxiety and major depressive disorder. I had some suicidal ideations before starting the medication, but now it feels like my depression is on steroids. I am working closely with my therapist who wants me to speak to my prescribing doc about the dose. I am unsure of what to do at this point because I haven't been on it long enough to experience the benefits. Mostly, I am terrified of being locked up."

For Depression "Celexa was prescribed for my mom (83). She had horrible side effects. Shaking hands, tight shoulders/muscles, lack of appetite, nausea, tiredness, and trouble sleeping. She has switched to Prozac but is having side effects from discontinuing it. Extreme agitation and weepiness. She enjoys knitting and reading and could not do either with the shaking in her hands."

For Anxiety and Stress "Have been dealing with anxiety/panic attacks/PTSD for years, and the doctor thought this would help with the stuff I was still struggling with. The nausea lasted about a week or so, but did go away. Now I have no appetite at all. Like eating one small meal a day, if anything at all, it has made anxiety much worse, especially when first waking up. Will be asking to try something else, as I know body chemistry is different for everyone."

For Anxiety and Stress "So it’s been a week today that I am on half a pill of 20 mg of Citalopram, and the side effects are horrible (headache, chills, weird burning sensation throughout my body, I’m so much more tired than usual, loss of appetite), but I am trying to hang in there. I haven’t had a panic attack or anxiety attack since, so I do have hope. Hopefully, the side effects won’t last much longer."

For Generalized Anxiety Disorder "Was prescribed 20 mg Celexa after coming off Abilify combination that made me put on 30# and develop high cholesterol. All the posts I've read about increase in all the symptoms you want to go away happened BIG TIME. I didn't notice them until week 2. Today was 4 wks on Celexa, slight decrease in intrusive thoughts, slight increase in mood however I wake every morning with dread, tingling over my arms and chest, no appetite, have lost 15#. So, I told my MD I wanted to reduce to 10mg. I guess we don't know unless we try. It's like I just need a reprieve from the anxiety, physical and mental. I took Celexa years ago and stopped after 6 mo because I felt better;) I do remember it wasn't easy initially. Who knows, maybe I'll go back to 20 and tough it out a few more weeks."

For Generalized Anxiety Disorder "Had my second dose today, and so far, not so good. Before starting citalopram, I suffered from GAD alone, but since starting them, I feel so much more anxious and depressed. I've spent my day trying to shut people off, including my own mum. I just haven't been in the mood to talk to anyone or even get up to walk the dog. After seeing so many reviews saying how much better it'll get, I've decided I'll try my hardest to stick to taking citalopram. I just hope it'll be as life-changing as many people have said on here! I haven't had many other side effects other than a little bit of nausea, a loss of appetite, and a lot of sweating."

Citalopram for Anxiety and Stress "Sometimes I think that someone employed by Celexa, Inc. creates the responses I read on this site. Most of the positive experiences do not seem likely. Celexa has been a nightmare for me. It makes me so angry. I'm from the Big Easy and would like to consider myself laid-back. I have a very strong belief that the reason this medication is prescribed so frequently is so the docs or the powers that be can receive the kickback from my pharmacy. I truly believe that. I'm going on month 4 and currently take 40 mgs. I cannot report any positive effects. I can attest to a loss in libido, rashes, depression, weight gain, dry mouth, loss of appetite, aches, and I can go on. And the only reason I take it is to obtain the medication that I do get relief from."

For Anxiety and Stress "As far as the treatment of my anxiety, it's truly been amazing. I've felt much better since starting. However, also since starting, I've lost my appetite a bit and have lost some weight."
