"35-year-old Caucasian male. I have taken this drug (the + version with the hydrochlorothizide diuretic) for several years and it has kept my blood pressure where it should be. No side effects. I initially switched to this ARB due to the persistent cough associated with ACE inhibitors. Recommended"

Atacand (candesartan) "Started Atacand HCT with BP ~ 180/90 & bad headache. Five hours later with BP unchanged, took 2 aspirin for headache after verifying compatibility with manufacturer. Two hours later BP 132/77. Fifteen hours after first dose, took second dose of Atacand HCT with BP 166/93. BP remained at ~ 160/90 for next 14 hours. After two doses, six aspirin, and 36 hours, BP dropped to ~ 135/78 and stayed. After a month, a high BP reading was 141/76 and a low 105/66. Noted: lim BP increase with exertion."

"I'm on 2mg Candesartan for mild hypertension. A month in, I had such bad chest pain, my Dr sent me for an ECG. It was normal thankfully! Since then, I've gone on to have daily headaches and dizziness. I started HRT at the same time as Candesartan and I put it down to that. I've now started with a painful neck, pain down both sides and a niggle in my back. I didn't know Candesartan had all these side effects. I phoned a pharmacist, this morning, and she's told me to stop immediately. I'm so glad I found this forum and I hope this post helps others with the same symptoms."

"I have had a terrible time with this medication. Has not brought my blood pressure down. I have been having heart palpitations, sharp pains in my chest that is so severe I thought I was having a heart attack also troubles breathing. I was fine on a lower dose with side effects but it wasn't bringing my blood pressure down so the doctor put it up to 24mg from 8mg. Also been coughing like crazy and troubles breathing. I hope other people have better luck with it. Just wanted to let people know if your having these symptoms that's what it is. Thanks"

"For some reason, this medicine seems to give me nasty palpitations and arrhythmia. It also makes me really tired, even on an 8mg dose. I tried switching to another medication and these side effects went away. Sadly I had to go back on candesartan because the other medicine caused really bad vertigo. Side effects came back after starting candesartan again, so the correlation is pretty clear. Hopefully I will find something that works for me since I really do NOT want to take candesartan anymore. I know several people who tolerate this medicine well, but for me it's absolutely terrible. We are all different."

"Started Candesartan 6/2020, 16mg. Seem to be ok until February 2021, blood pressure started to rise. I'm assuming because of the pandemic, couldn't workout like I wanted to. Doctor increased dosage to 32mg. Since then my life has been pretty scary. Every morning before breakfast and evening before dinner, I'm so lightheaded, depressed, crying because I don't know if I'm about to pass out. Can't go in the sun, get too dehydrated. Acid reflux every evening. Can't concentrate due to tinnitus. And pressure still high. At the pharmacy now to get different drug."

"Until two weeks ago I had been on this medication for at least a decade, 16mg morning. It controlled my BP pretty well. Seemingly unconnected, two years ago I developed what was diagnosed as very painful hip bursitis (both sides) when walking - I was a daily 4-5km walker. The pain steadily worsened to the point I could no longer walk. From about 8 months ago I was literally only able to hobble around the house. In desperation two months ago I changed my GP. He couldn't find anything wrong other than the bursitis, but as a last resort - two weeks ago - suggested stopping the Candestartan for a few days (it has a short half life so effect would show up within 36-48 hours). Lo and behold!! 48 hours later I was able to walk freely. The next day I walked a km, and have stepped it up over the last 10 days back to an average 5km a day. NO PAIN! I have my life back! I now find that back and leg pain are this med's stated number one side effect. I would appreciate having the kinetics explained."

"I'm a multi-stroke survivor who has silent migraines with auras; malignant hypertension (MHP)and Crohn's. Have tried many BP medications but the adverse effects I couldn't tolerated, especially the dizziness (already a fall risk after the strokes). A doctor seeing that I'm sensitive to medications and hypokalemic, put me on Candesartan as it's a potassium sparing medication; has a strong BP lowering effect; and less side-effects than ACE inhibitors. No adverse effects. One of the few medications that is like a sugar pill to me to take. It's not enough to control my MHP itself even at 32mg, but combined with another and a water pill it can get my 230/120 BP down to 120/80s. I still have silent migraines with auras with Candesartan, but it, and elimination of caffeine, reduces the auras to about once a month. Overall, very pleased with the medication."

"Replying to Paul7, I was on 4mg Candesartan for 2 years & I could not sleep at night due to the side effect of nasal congestion plus urinal tract infection. I have switched recently to Indapamide 1.5mg SR diuretic which seems to work well along with my Amlodipine 5mg. Statins also gave me sinus/nasal problems so I have reduced the dosage and now fine. Hope this helps."

"I started off on lowest dose of candesartan for high blood pressure, then I was increased to current 32mg over 12 months. Luckily I had no side effects, but no effect on BP at all! I started off at 160+/90+ hr 70+/- and I am still at that now. I'm 56 years old, not overweight eat healthily, now on clopidogrel as well and low dose omeprazole (16 years) ,feel like I'm starting to rattle!!"

"Have been on 16mg of candesartan for one week, now gone down to 8mg, and considering stopping. My blood pressure was always borderline, but I was put on this drug anyway. I have floaters in my eyes if my potassium goes too high or I don't drink enough. I have muscle aches and clicking joints when I move them. I feel tired and lethargic most of the day, I have also gained anxiety which I've never had before. Not a great medication for me."

"At my request following online research I asked my GP to change me from Losartan to Candesartan as I was not getting satisfactory BP control. In less than a week my BP has gone from 160/89 down to 135/80 on 12mgs. I feel fantastic and have no obvious side effects. I wish I'd made the change sooner."

"Took two Candesartan 8mg. 12 hours after the second dose, I started to feel something in my throat. The beginning of an allergic reaction. I had a quite severe throat swelling. It only lasted 12 hours. Be careful when you start using this drug"

"Started at 4mg, then increased to 8 mg for high blood pressure; it is not controlling my BP in the least, seems to be like water. However I have to blow my nose a lot, have palpitations, sore swollen legs, great fatigue and huge anxiety. I am stopping this useless medication."

"I was put on Candesartan from the start of this year. After that I started having constant symptoms of respiratory infections, like the symptoms when you are developing a cold/flu. Turns out it's one of the possible side effects of this drug. Other symptoms have been brain fog. Going to switch back to amlodipine, which I was taking before this."

"I took Candesartan for high blood pressure for 6 months. I noticed extreme hair loss and developed a severe rash on both legs. As soon as I stopped the medication all side effects went away. DID NOT WORK FOR ME!"

"I was prescribed this drug to control my high blood pressure of 165/110. I tried other drugs but suffered bad side effects. I'm on the combo Atacand of 16/12.5 and 4mg. My blood pressure is under 140/90 and I have only occasional shortness of breath when exercising. As a great side effect is my ability to hold an erection stronger and longer - something that was missing before."

"I have high blood pressure(BP), about 140/100 and after several studies the doctor assigned me Xiletil (Candesartan Cilexetil). After 1 week, my BP dropped to 130/80 and 1 month after to 120/80. I truly recommmend this product. So far it hasn't caused any side effects on me."

"This medication did not work for me. I started experiencing anxiety even though I never had this problem in my life. I also experienced tightness in my chest and had trouble with digestion. It didn’t bring down my blood pressure. I made one trip to the emergency and two trips to my doctor who changed my medication to Amlodipine and all of the negative symptoms were gone. I am back to normal and my blood pressure is now 120/65. I guess every person is different but don’t suffer if one medication doesn’t work for you."

"I have been on Candesartan for 16 years for high BP with relatively no problems. Unfortunately it was giving me low Sodium levels so my GP has taken me off it. I am now struggling to find a tablet that suits me."

"I can fully agree with many of the views, been on different levels of Candersartan sorted with 4mg no improvement in blood pressure it wandered around from highs of 180/100 to lows of 111/68 increased to 8mg had pains in my neck and back, along with low heart rate nasal congestion. And also picked up tiredness and some depression all in all a disaster. Great if it works for you I'm back at the Doctors to discuss further"

"been taking candesartan for4 months now, 8mg along with low dose moxonindine. While it has helped with BP it has caused numerous side effects from head pressure, light headed, heart palpitations and very sore achy joints. I will be speaking to cardiologist within the next few weeks and getting this medication changed, I need to have some sort of life back."

"I've been on candesartan for 2 years prescribed by a doctor who tried to bring my blood pressure down. Initially, it seemed they worked except when I needed to go into ER with an episode and my BP was incredibly high (White coat syndrome) and they'd tell me to take the maximum dose 32mg. I started to get headaches, which became daily and then turned into migraines, which I have not had since I was a teenager. The doctors would just blame everything on my BP which was white coat syndrome (being scared of hospitals and clinical environments). They put me on NSAIDs (naproxen, ibuprofen etc) which causes HBP. I ended up getting diazapam to try to bring my BP down as it was causing me anxiety. The headaches were scary as I was convinced I had a brain tumor or aneurysm. I booked to see a neurologist who put me on amitryptiline 25gm for the headaches which did work and had a MRI scan which thankfully was all clear. I then stopped using candesartan and my BP was back to normal and I had no headaches."

"My blood pressure was 249/149 to start tried numerous blood pressure medication and had side effects with everything up to now. I'm on 32mg candesartan and 10mg amlodipine and my bp is still 170/110. I feel rubbish all the time tired, bloated, feeling sick, urinating a lot, headache, joint pain, this is just to name a few. When asking gp about side effects, they say lets get the bp down first. I think I'm going to take my chances with out the medication because my quality of life is so bad, it was better without the medication."
