" Doc put me on this scam by this company. because a health fair portable scanner showed pre-osteoporosis (osteopenia), had full bone scan, same thing. I've been on it 1.5 yrs and fortunately did not have the side affects most others noted. Went to see an orthopedic surgeon for another issue and I mentioned this drug and my Dx. He said STOP TAKING IT!!! He said my bone density is normal for someone my age (67 male). He said his wifes T-Score is worse than mine but she doesn't need to be on it, and in fact should NOT be on it, and that I just need to get calcium through food, and vitamin D. Turns out that the drug companies had a drug without a Dx, so they basically created a Dx and cheap scanners for the Dr. office to sell this drug. He referred me to research done by NPR - I urge you to read it: google how-a-bone-disease-grew-to-fit-the-prescription. Good luck with what you decide to do, I wont be taking any more of this drug."

"I was in pretty good shape working out 3 to 4 days a week, never really having any bone problems. My doctor prescribed Alendronate sodium for me supposedly to prevent osteoporosis because I am taking prednisone. I took it twice as instructed. By that night I felt some pains. Through the night it got worse, but figured it would settle down. OMG !! That next day , I felt like a can that was being crushed. I felt like I was going to be paralyzed from my right arm, through my hip , in my groin area, and my right shin and leg was numb and still is. My right side still hurts after 5 months or more. Spent a whole day in the emergency room where the same doctor was on duty. The doctor tried to say it seemed like it was my back nerve. Barely gave me anything for the pain. I stay in pain. I need a attorney about this because my insurance will not pay for an MRI . AND Though it's not as bad I believe it has caused permanent damage "

Fosamax (alendronate) "I have been taking Fosamax for almost 2 years. At first, it caused mild constipation, but I think if you take it as prescribed with plenty of water and avoid lying down for the full 30 minutes, as well as not eating breakfast or taking other medication until after that, you should be fine. My doctor prescribed it after I had surgery on a broken wrist due to a fall. She recommended I take it for 5 years."

"I started taking Alendronate 70 mg pill as prescribed. The next morning I woke up with severe heartburn and belching. Then I started feeling the urge to vomit. All I could bring up was phlegm and a foamy liquid. I had a very bad acidly taste in my mouth. I finally called my doctor and was told to stop taking the Alendronate and stay on a clear liquid diet. My joints hurt, my jawbone and teeth hurt, back pain and severe indigestion. After 6 hours I was still vomiting. My doctor prescribed Zofran to calm my stomach. I started feeling better so tried eating. It's been 5 days and I'm still having indigestion after eating and pain in my feet and hands. I hope this nasty medicine is out of my system soon!"

"I too, took this drug to help strengthen my bones, for just a little over a year. I thought it was great, it was gonna help. Well it was just the opposite. I suffered a spontaneous fracture of my left femur. Never felt pain like that in my life. After inserting the 18 inch or more rod in the femur, I had to miss work to go to a rehab for 3 weeks. This is one drug I will never recommend to anyone..."

"I have been on alendronate for 3 months for osteopenia. I take 70mg once a week. The first two weeks were fine, then the side effects came with a vengeance! Severe back pain that lasts for days, ever-present thigh pain, ear pain, dry mouth, eye pain, headaches and an annoying fatigue. I plan on finishing up the third month then calling my doctor. Though right now I don't think there's anything she can say that would convince me to continue taking this."

"After my second stress fracture in a foot I started taking this, 70 mg a week. Initially I had some issues with restless legs but that went away. After about 3 weeks I started to get some bloating. The bloating is now worse than before I stopped eating gluten. I took it for 7 weeks, but now I'm done."

"I took my first dose yesterday and my shoulders, rib cage and teeth hurt all night long and still this morning. This prompted me to read reviews and don’t understand why this is prescribed after reading these reviews. My teeth felt so sensitive! I’m calling my doctor and not taking this again."

"19 hours after first dose stomach pain, chills, body aches so bad could not sit in a chair. Fortunate I was home to lie in bed all day. Following day woke with jaw aching and all day teeth/gum soreness. I will not be taking a second dose. I wish I never took the first. Scary medicine."

"I have been taking Alendronate for 13 weeks. My bones have started hurting so bad I can’t stand it. I started wondering if it was this medication, read the side effects and sure enough, that’s the problem. I won’t be taking another one, and hopefully this pain will go away. I would not recommend this drug."

"Three hours after taking the first pill I had severe chest and back pain, some nausea, and indigestion. My chest felt painful, and the pain lasted throughout the night and early the next morning however by the afternoon I felt better. Two days later I have minimal chest pain, and the back pain has lessened but the indigestion is still lingering. I hope these symptoms do not last."

"I took my first 70mg yesterday morning. I didn't want to start this medicine but I got scared when I woke up and my neck felt like it shattered like a branch breaking off, I could hear it and feel it. I already had a neck plate at c5 and c6. Since taking just one pill yesterday morning, I am miserable. I have had severe nausea since and I'm so bloated even at 106 pounds. I'm so fatigued and have always had severe bone pain because I was recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis recently and lupus. I'm not going to take it anymore after reading all the reviews. I'm scared that more side effects will show up after taking one pill. I'm going to start back at the gym, using the treadmill, and light weights. I'm 63 and I'm pretty mobile considering all my health issues. Also, I think I have long covid. During my second covid, I could barely walk because of severe joint pain from it or it's possible I'm doomed from one moderna vaccine. I never finished my vaccines and won't."

"I noticed joint aches with this medication (and also from concommitant Femara, an anti-estrogen drug). Taking Glucosamin/Condroitin (1000/600 per day) solved the problem. When I stop the G/C, the aches come back. The only downside to this medicine for me is forgetting to take it once per week - or accidentally ingesting food beforehand, so I couldn't take it that day."

"After 4 weekly doses, I ended up throwing this in garbage. I experienced very bad soreness and stiffness in both my shoulders and forearms. Very scared! Read the reviews, and was concerned this could go on for months & months. Did some research started taking Algaecal Plus 3 times a day with (live conscious) k2+D3, also 3 times a day. These are both wonderful products, and can be continued for good bone health! I started feeling better in a few days. I am very thankful for reviews, they have helped me make better decisions about my health, I hope this helps you!"

"I am so glad I looked this up on the Internet. I have been on Fosamax for six weeks and suddenly I am getting terrible indigestion and pain in my ears. I’ve never had these problems before, so when I read all these reviews, I realized I have to get off this drug immediately."

"I had no problem tolerating Actonel, but when my prescription plan changed me to alendronate sodium, I almost immediately began having so much trouble with my knees that I can no longer use walking as my weight-bearing exercise, which is crucial to prevent."

"Two seniors in the same house taking Alendronate Sodium tablets 70 mg once a week. Feeling stiff and sore at night the next morning had a hard time getting up because of the pain. The next few weeks one went from pain so bad has to use a walker to get around. Had x-rays and MRI to make sure of no broken bones. I can not help to think we got a bad dose seeing it was a renewed prescription. The one thing they don't put in the patients guide is how to stop the pain."

"Taking this horrible drug for osteopenia, experienced terrible shoulder and forearm musculoskeletal soreness and pain on both arms. The only thing that’s working for me is CBD soft gels. All great reviews on this softgel! It’s really helping with my inflammation. Taking 30mg in morning and at night. Starting to feel so much better, taking inflammation away. That Alendronate/Fosamax is nothing but poison, threw it out!!"

"Taking Fosamax on a regular basis took me from having full-blown osteoporosis into barely having osteopenia! The only downside was that I still have some signs of osteopenia, and because I need to have my ninth major spinal surgery, whereupon I will have Harrington rods from the base of my skull to my pelvis, is that, in preparation for the surgery, I have spent the last four months (and will spend the next two months, possibly continuing out to a complete year), going to the doctor's office once a week for shots in each arm in order for second medication supplementing Fosamax in order to build up my bone strength even further."

"I am 76 years old and have had 3 bone scans in the last ten to twelve years which have shown that I have osteopenia. It was suggested that I add more calcium to my diet. After my last scan, I was prescribed alendronate 70mg once a week. Been taking it for 6 months, and have no problems taking it except for feeling thirsty first thing in the morning. I am now having weak and painful legs and my hands and forearms ache. I have read this may not be a suitable treatment for osteopenia. Will be seeing my doctor to discuss this."
