Larry Weber: ?Current FDA Regulations Reflect a Pre-Web Communications Paradigm?

W2 Group Chairman Comments on Use of Sponsored Links and Social Media During FDA Public Hearing

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 13, 2009 - Larry Weber, chairman of W2 Group – a group of digitally driven marketing services companies that help marketers in their new role as builders of communities and content aggregators – is speaking today at the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) public hearing on “Promotion of FDA-Regulated Medical Products Using the Internet and Social Media Tools.”

Weber will address the need to establish updated FDA guidelines that allow manufacturers to provide information online via sponsored links and social media – in a completely transparent and compliant manner. According to Weber, current FDA regulations don't distinguish between Internet and print communications, or factor in how consumers search for health information online. Weber says the FDA must not “over-regulate,” but should create guidelines that protect patients, yet still allow manufacturers to transparently provide content online to meet consumer demand.

An early advocate of using the Internet for business and marketing, Weber founded one of the first interactive marketing agencies and also co-founded the Massachusetts Interactive Media Council, which later became the Massachusetts Innovation and Technology Exchange – the largest Internet advocacy association in the world. Weber has also authored two books on the use of social media in business. The first – Marketing to the Social Web: How Digital Customer Communities Build Your Business – was published by John Wiley & Sons in 2007. The second – Sticks & Stones: How Digital Business Reputations Are Created Over Time¦ And Lost in a Click – was published by Wiley in July 2009.
