Has not been evaluated for more than ADHD, but had a freak out epesode over her homework and said " She would kill me if I didn't help her." I imediately contacted her Child Sycoligist, but is this extreme 1st step?
Did he talk to her and ask her what she meant? Kids say some stupid things. Does she even know what killing you means? I think it was a little drastic if he didn't sit down and talk to her. If she truly meant she would kill you, then she needs something done. This type of drug, while not recommended for young kids is used when it has to be. The reason they don't recommend it is because they didn't test it in kids that young.
I agree with Kaismama. Kids say a lot of things they dont really mean. Did the child really mean "I'm going to kill you" or was it just an expression of frustration? Did they examine and talk to the child or just automatically prescribe something? In today's day and age where children sometimes do kill people, medical personnel tend to err on the side of caution but it may be over kill in this case. Did you truly feel threatened? I mean you are the one who went right to the psychologist-you were the one there. If you truly felt threatened by the child then yes, something needs to be done but if you didnt feel threatened, then perhaps you overreacted. Children are not stupid and they are not above a little manipulation. Perhaps it was for a reaction from you? It sounds to me like you might benefit from family counseling. If you cant handle this child at age 6, how are you going to manage them when they are 16? Parenting is not easy.
It is better to learn to be an effective parent than to automatically drug a child but again, you were the one there in the situation. If you didnt feel threatened then it may have been better for you to take control of the situation rather than show the child you have no control over them and that you had to call someone else into the situation. If you did truly feel threatened then you did the right thing. I would really recommend that you both enter family counselling and maybe some parenting counselling. Your child needs to be evaluated by a child psychiatrist (an MD) not a psychologist (not an MD) to see if she is a danger to herself or others.
