I don't understand why medicine is needed? Is depression not caused by events in ones life, like job loss, bankruptcy, family deaths, divorce, etc. Is not the only way to cure the depression is to have the actual reasons to be depressed solved. Like getting another job or what ever needs taken care of. Don't the drugs just make the person not care about the things that made them depressed? Doesn't it make sense to address the issues you are depressed about ? Why is depression not normal after life events that very well the person should be depresses? I am very depressed over life events but to not be would be not normal. How about addressing the issues that make people depressed?
Keith, there are two types of depression ~ situational depressions which are caused by life events and are usually self-limiting, and clinical depression which is caused by actual chemical imbalances in the brain and persist for life.. For instance, Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar depression and unipolar depression are NOT caused by a divorce, loss of a job, etc.
Therapy is a useful adjunct therapy in those cases but likely would not succeed on it's own in the severely ill.
WCV nailed it. Nothing happened to me to make me this way; It's the genetic lottery; so while my siblings are a bit 'eccentric', I got everything. Tiny tiny alterations in brain chemistry devastate me.
