I take 5mg abilify & 150 Alventa xl for anxiety & depression
have been asking that question for years. maybe i would feel better with no meds but i never give my body the chance to find out. i have mdd and when i found out that ambien and xanax could cause depression i tapered off both of them. i sure miss the ambien cr. possibly you and your doc could taper you off one med at a time and see how it goes?
To find this out you need to reduce one med at a time with the help of your doctor. I tried it on one med and could only go down a bit. Then I tried another and did the same. I need my meds and cannot go off completely because I have reoccurring depressions. I am fine with that. Better than deprssions.
My answer is a question; do you have a mental illness or is your problem a temporary one caused by situational depression and anxiety (stress or event caused)? If it is the latter, then you can be sure you will be off the meds at some point in the near future (near is defined by your psychiatrist and your therapist with your help).
If you have a mental illness - I do, major depression - you MAY be on them the rest of your life. It is possible, especially if you are young, to permanently change your brain chemistry so you don't need the meds. That takes a lot of work, but many people have done it. If you have been going through depression cycles for a long time, 50 years in my case, there is little chance your brain chemistry is going to change.
I don't expect to be dysfunctional again, but I do expect to need my team of doctors and my meds pretty much forever. I have learned to accept this and I feel no shame or guilt. I am ill, I could just as well be in remission from cancer or have an organ transplant. I take my meds, see my therapist and keep going.
Talk to your doctors and see where you are on the spectrum I have described. No matter where you are, you are going to be OK. It may sound a little silly, but don't worry about it. As long as you are functioning fine, nothing else really matters all that much, does it? if you are not feeling fine, work with your team to get there as soon as you can.
All my best,
Hi pc. I think you know by the way you feel, and how long you've felt this way. Stay on your meds until you talk to your doc. As others have said, you may need to take meds the rest of your life. If you do need to, then it's a matter of the quality of life you want to have. I personally, would rather be balanced then to stop meds. Your smart to ask this question. There are so many, many people who get off their meds, only to go back in to anxiety or depression. I worked at a Maximum Security state prison. When a prisoner didn't take their meds, they took their anxiety and depression out on other prisoners, and it wasn't a pretty sight. I'm glad you sought help from others.
Take care and holler if you need me or any of us.
