Would you have to take double the amount of xanax xr to get the same effect as if you took 3mg xanax ir?
No. You will not get that "slam dunk" effect with the XR, it's designed to be a stable level release, do not increase the dose, it will be horrid if and when you want to stop or switch.
Actually you usually need a little less when you're taking xr.
I would say yes. I was taking Xanax 0.5mg twice daily then switched to Xanax XR 0.5mg once daily. It's the same amount of lorezapam in each- the first comes with a "punch" because it only lasts 4-5 hours and the later is dripped out slowly through approximately 12 hours so you don't feel it as much. I got the doctor to increase my XR to 0.5 twice daily very quickly after the switch because a slow drip of 0.5 over 12 hours felt like I was taking practically nothing.
