I've been taking Omeprazole for years what will happen if I suddenly stop taking it? (besides the return of heartburn)
The return of heart burn is about it.
Note: Talk to your doctor before discontinuing any medication.
Possible Plan of Action to prevent rebound heartburn (I don't know what else to call this) due to prolonged acid suppression:
20mg Once daily: Alternate 1 tablet with a half tablet couple of weeks then half tablet for a couple of weeks. Then stop. If you start getting severe heart burn try to use antacids short term. If you are still having problems after a week slow down on the weaning.
If you are taking omeprazole twice a day it is pretty much the same. Go down about 5 mg how ever fast you can tolerate it.
Standard Process (a maker of various vitamins and supplements that are easily absorbed by the body) makes a supplement called "Spanish Black Radish ". You'll need to find someone in your area that sells it. I've heard great things about it helping people get off the acid reflux meds. These meds are SO not good for our bodies! I hope to do the same thing here soon - get off the Omeprazole. Best wishes to you - EJ23
