Doxycycline is one of several medications that make people more sensitive to the sun and burn easier while out in the sun. We say that such drugs are photosensitizing and the type of reactions that doxycycline causes is called a phototoxic reaction.
These phototoxic reactions occur because sunlight causes some drugs or their metabolites to become photoactivated - such activation causes direct damage to tissue.
Patients using doxycycline or other such photosensitizing medications should exercise caution while outdoors and use sun protective clothing and sunscreen.
