My son is taking Focalin and now has poor vision. 16 months ago he did not wear glasses. Focalin is the only new drug he has been taking.
Blurred vision is a rare severe side effect of Focalin but this is the type of blurred vision that would not necessarily be correctable with glasses because it has to do with the brain not the eye. I would definitely mention it to his prescribing physician however. Sometimes children can have difficulty with accomodation (adjusting from distance vision to close vision and vice versa) while on Focalin. They would require only reading glasses for this type of problem, but if it occurs, they may need to be changed to a different medication. It should resolve itself once he is off the medication if this is what is occuring. Is he wearing glasses for reading only or does he have to wear them all the time for distance vision too? If he has trouble seeing distances then it is not trouble with accomodation and most likely not due to the medication. It could just be coincidental as well. Eyesight changes can occur in school aged children.
If his vision is correctable with glasses for full time use, not just reading, then it is more likely due to the structure of his eyeball. Nearsighted (myopic) people usually have too long an eye and farsighted (hyperopic) people have too short an eye and the light rays do not focus correctly on the retina. Astigmatism is caused by an irregularity in the cornea which is the clear dome over the colored part of the eye (iris). Instead of being shaped like a round basketball, it is shaped more like a football. This distorts the light rays and causes blurring but can be corrected with the proper lenses. Many times poor vision and eye structure defects run in families but on occasion, poor eyesight occurs in a person with no family history. (Bad eyesight starts somewhere) I started wearing glasses in the 4th grade and I was on no medication at all.
