My aunt is out of Prozac and is in need until her doc. appointment and all I have is Sertraline 50mg can I give it to her?
I would not, they are in the same class however they react on different receptors so she may experience adverse effects. Prozac stays in your system long, a week I've heard. So she should be fine until she can get a refill.
I agree with Jedwards excellent answer except I might go a step further and suggest it's a really bad idea. Years ago I had a Doctor who had me do a switch with similar meds due to intolerable side effects and it sent me bonkers (more).
I agree with what folks have said here... it is a bad idea. Different medications, different receptors in the brain... could throw the brain chemistry out of whack.
