Sister has chronic back pain and Dr. has her take oxi-20mg. And now she is having dental extracting being done and it caused infection and ear pain and mouth pain. So they added fenty. 12 mg. Patch for every 72 hours. The patch isn't doing it for pain relief in the back if needing the oxi- 20 mg. Does she continue as normal ? One tablet every 8 hours? She's 145 lbs. Thx
I am surprised that your doctor prescribed fentanyl for a mouth infection. I think she would be better off taking Vicodin. There are different types of pain meds for different types of pain.
I have had back pain, stemming from a spine problem, and I think that the OxyContin prescription is good Re: strength, but every 8 hours? I think that this is should be every 6 hours.
fentanyl is very hard to quit. Actually, fentanyl and OxyContin are both very hard to quit.
I am a Psychologist, not an M.D., but I have been suffering from chronic back pain for 10 years, and have taken both drugs you have mentioned.
The best thing for Chronic back pain, is an extended release medicine, such as MS Contin (or, it's generic form). I have been taking this med for 6 years, and I don't feel any back pain. I take OxyContin for "breakthrough" pain.
Don't let your sister drive while taking fentanyl, I totaled a car while I was on it, and i didn't think that I was impaired.
But now, since I have been taking MS Contin ER 60 mg, I feel great, and I don't ever feel dopey. If I should get any additional pain, from things like the Humidity, or sleeping in a bad position, I have the OxyContin, every 6 hours, as needed.
I don't know if your sister's doc is a Pain Doctor, or a regular GP. Depending on their relationship, I would have your sister ask for the MS Contin. It relieves the pain really well, and I don't get "high" from it..
