We are trying to figure out if my dad can extend his dosage by cutting his pills in half
As long as it is an immediate release pill, you should be able to split it in half. If it is the long acting form (Exalgo) then it cant be cut or altered because this messes up the time release mechanism. I read your other question about your dad's Dr being out of town and it is really irresponsible on her part but unfortunately with CII drugs, they cannot call them in in most cases. You might see if the pharmacy would be willing to give him a few days worth to get him by. In rare cases I have seen CII scripts filled if the Dr calls and promises to mail a written script in right away but that was several years ago and things have gotten much more strict since then. This really puts your Dad in a bind and he is going to be hurting until she gets back. I would give this doc both barrels since she wants to yell at him one month about calling too early then the next month he waits and it is too late.
She should have taken in account of which patients would need meds during the time she was off and made some kind of arrangements for them. They can write scripts that say "dont fill unitl __" and she could have had him pick that up before she left. When you see her again, you could ask her if she would write his scripts like that. If she sees him every three months she can write scripts to cover all three months by writing them to say "Do not fill until __" for each month so then he has them in hand but the pharmacy cant fill them until the date due. It is legal for them to do that. If your Dad finds he cant stand it then the ER may (and the stress is on may) give him a few days of meds until he can see her but many ERs are making it a policy not to do this since too many people have abused it. (Again, the actions of a few ruins it for everyone) I hope he can make it through and hopefully it will only be a few days. If he can cut his breakthrough meds in half and space them out maybe he can make it through. It wont be easy, I know!
