I have had a mitral mechanical valve since 2007. I understand what you are going through. I cried at first because I was so tired but the clicking kept me awake. To be honest, the clicking still bothers me sometimes, but I have found a few things that help. Usually I listen to some relaxing music and set my radio to go off in like an hour, that distracts from the clicking. Also, I find it is a little more annoying if I try to fall asleep lying on my left side, so of course I try to lie on my right side or my back. I fall alsleep a lot easier than I used to but it is still difficult if something happens and I wake up in the middle of the night... that's the worst. Limit or No caffeine especially before bedtime. I don't notice the clicking as much through the day but other people do. It is not something I dwell on, but I understand. It does take a while, so give it some time. I am a 49 year old female. I hope maybe some of this was helpful.
I am 63 and had my aortic valve replaced in June 2009 and enjoyed the click to begin with then I ignored it. I could breathe so much better it was worth it. Definitely find it was louder when lying on my left side. Having a TV or music or "white noise" to concentrate on helps. I view it like the floaters I have in my eyes - they are there but I ignore them - same with the click.
