i have been on xyrem for 8 years and swear it saved my life. I have been experiencing short term memory loss and wonder if it could be my xyrem? I take 3.75 mg twice at night and have no daytime sleepiness now. The memory loss may be normal with age but can't help but wondering if it is my xyrem
I hadn't heard of this drug before so I read the online description of it. One of the many side effects listed is "Being forgetful." This medication has very specific dosing requirements. Are you taking it exactly as you are supposed to? I think you should definitely talk to your doctor about this. He may need to adjust your dosage.
I destroyed my short term memory function by taking ambien for 6 years and now I have what's called "anterrograde amnesia". Essentially the only new memories I can make are ones that have an emotional component because emotional memories are processed in the brain differently. You might want to do a search for anterrograde amnesia and xyrem. I suspect that most if not all sleep agents including OTC medications have an adverse effect on memory, if taken nightly for a long period. But In my opinnion good sleep is more necessary to quality of life than memories, though it's a hell of a choice to have to make.
